For years, Toasty had been a particularly affectionate cat. He was always ready to snuggle up to his humans and would start purring the moment he was petted.
But recently, his behaviour changed abruptly. His owner, a Reddit user known as Artistic-Listen7975, noticed he was acting unusually. The cat started turning his nose up at his wet food; instead of eating it, he would just lick the moisture off. At the same time, the once-cuddly cat began to hide away and sleep for most of the day.
A worrying change
As the days went by, the family's concern grew. Toasty seemed increasingly tired and sad, to the point where his owner began to fear the worst.
Fearing a serious illness, she decided to take him to the vet. A series of tests were run, and the bill quickly rose to $450. Yet, despite the visit, no clear cause was identified. Meanwhile, the cat's condition showed no signs of improvement.
The surprising truth revealed
After a week, Toasty's owner remembered a detail that had previously escaped her. A few days earlier, she had accidentally broken the glass the cat usually drank his water from.
She had replaced it with a ceramic bowl, convinced it wouldn't make any difference – especially since their other cats used this type of bowl without any issues. But Toasty, it seemed, had a very different opinion.
To test her hunch, she filled a new glass with water and placed it in front of him. The cat's reaction was immediate: he started drinking and continued for several minutes straight.
The truth turned out to be much simpler than an illness: Toasty was simply refusing to drink from any container other than his usual glass. Deprived of his favourite water source, he had become dehydrated, which explained his fatigue and strange behaviour.
Since then, the cat has gradually regained his energy and returned to his old self. Relieved, his owner hopes this story will remind other pet owners of something essential: even the smallest change in an animal's routine can sometimes have surprising consequences.
