A dog that went missing in the mountains for over a week has been found alive at an altitude of nearly 6,200 feet, after wandering alone for nine days.

As reported by the French news site Sud Ouest, the nine-month-old puppy had got lost during a mountain outing in France.

The puppy had apparently followed a group of climbers before finding himself alone on a snow-covered peak, unable to get back down on his own.

A dramatic rescue

Despite being exposed to the cold, wind, and a lack of food, the puppy managed to survive for nine days. He was eventually found in a weakened state by a group of climbers who heard his whimpering.

Realising he wouldn't be able to get down on his own, the climbers stopped their ascent to rescue the animal. They picked him up and carried him with them on their way back down to the valley.

A happy reunion

Once safely back in the valley, the puppy was reunited with his owner, much to the delight of his rescuers.
