Paco's arrival at the Trumbull Animal Group shelter was an emotional moment. When the 13-year-old Chihuahua cross came into the centre, the volunteers immediately had a feeling they’d seen him before.
Looking through their records, they made a heartbreaking discovery: Paco had been adopted from that very same shelter back in 2016. But almost a decade later, the little dog had returned under very sad circumstances.
A life turned upside down
Paco's owner had recently passed away, and none of his family or friends were able to take the little dog in. With no other option, he was brought to the shelter, which is located in the US state of Connecticut.
When he arrived, Paco was very disoriented. The volunteers explained that he seemed confused and a little frightened by his new surroundings. Gradually, however, he is starting to regain his confidence. His carers have already noticed some encouraging signs: he wags his tail, enjoys his treats, and loves his walks outside.
Hoping for a happy retirement
Before they start looking for a new family for him, the shelter wants to ensure Paco is in good health. The little dog has already had blood tests, and the vets are considering surgery. The team would like to remove a large lipoma on his chest, treat a dental problem, and possibly correct what is known as a "cherry eye" (a prolapsed third eyelid gland).
But there is one important hurdle to overcome first: the vets need to check if he can handle the anaesthetic, as they suspect he has a heart murmur.
To fund Paco's care, the shelter is working with local animal control services and is relying on donations from the community.
Despite everything he has just been through, the little dog is still full of life. The volunteers are now hoping to find him a family who will be ready to offer him a peaceful and loving retirement.
