One winter evening in the US, a volunteer from the IndyHumane rescue centre was taking one of the dogs for its last walk of the day. As she passed a skip not far from the building, she noticed a car pull up briefly. The driver placed a cardboard box on the ground and then drove away.
A shocking discovery
Intrigued, the volunteer went closer. The box had small air holes punched in it. Peering through one, she could make out two cats. She immediately alerted a member of staff. Together, they brought the box inside to safety; the night was freezing, and the ground was covered in snow. As they lifted it, something surprised the rescuers: it felt much heavier than just two cats.
When they opened the box inside the warm building, they were in for a shock. It wasn't two cats, but ten, all huddled together.
Once the initial shock wore off, the team realised they had never seen so many animals abandoned in a single box. The medical team identified what seemed to be a blended family: two mother cats with their respective litters, two adolescents, and one adult male. Despite the stress of being abandoned, all the cats were exceptionally gentle.
The 'Friends' gang
To celebrate their new beginning, the rescue centre decided to name the little group after the characters from the famous TV show Friends. The mothers and their kittens have already gone to foster homes to recover, while the other three adults are now ready to find their forever homes.
If they had been found just half an hour later, this family would have spent the night outside in the snow. Thanks to the volunteer's vigilance, the 'Friends' are now safe and warm, waiting for just one thing: to meet their future best friends.
