But sometimes, they form an even closer bond with some of their residents...
This was certainly the case with a tomcat named Wonder. In fact, he made quite an impression from the moment he arrived.
A very stressed cat
Wonder arrived at the shelter in New York, USA, following the death of his owner. The poor cat was extremely anxious and stressed when he first came in. His whole body was arched with stress, and he would hiss whenever the rescuers approached his enclosure.
Fortunately, the ACC's feline behaviour team was used to dealing with anxious cats like Wonder and knew exactly how to win his trust.
Lots of cuddles
With time, patience, positive interactions, and a lot of love from the team, the tomcat gradually began to relax. Wonder eventually turned out to be a very affectionate cat! However, he still keeps his ears flat, and despite the rescuers' best efforts, they just won't stand up.
So, the rescuers decided to leave a little note on the door of his enclosure: "I'm a sweet old man with funny ears – I'll greet you with a hiss, but what I really want is a fuss! Say hello gently and I'll love you." While the ACC shelter team adores Wonder, they would be even happier if he could finally find his forever family, something we hope happens for him very soon!
