RSPCA inspectors have launched an appeal after two “gentle-natured” tabby cats were discovered abandoned in a cardboard box beside a broken tent in a Derbyshire field.

The pair were found near George Street in Church Gresley, close to Swadlincote, next to discarded bedding at the entrance to open land.

A local resident spotted the box and, after checking with neighbours to see if anyone recognised the cats, took them home and alerted the charity.

Animal Rescue Officer Tom Hall collected the siblings on 24 January and transported them to a nearby vet before they were transferred to the RSPCA’s Birmingham Animal Hospital for further care.

The cats, believed to be around two years old, have been named Tom Jones and Melinda. Vets discovered both had heavy worm burdens, and Melinda was found to have scarring from a previously ruptured eye. Thankfully, the injury is not causing ongoing problems.

After receiving vaccinations and treatment for fleas and worms, the bonded pair were moved to the RSPCA’s Hillfield Animal Centre in Stretton.

Bonded pair seeking new home

Staff say the siblings share a close bond and have sweet, if slightly timid, temperaments.

They are now recovering well and enjoying plenty of care and affection as efforts continue to find them a loving home together.
