How will Chief Mouser Larry take to new Prime Minister Andy Burnham's dog?

By Greta Inglis

Chief Mouser of Downing Street for 15 years, Larry has lived with seven Prime Ministers to date. Now he may be sharing his space with a canine companion.

Larry awaited his seventh Prime Minister at Downing Street on Monday, having served as Chief Mouser to the Cabinet Office since his arrival back in 2011.

He may have shown Andy Burnham a warm welcome, but how will he feel when the time comes to meet his dog Axel?

Who is Axel?

The Prime Minister adopted Bichon-Poo Axel from The Dogs Trust in Shrewsbury, after he spent 12 days in their care.

Now there is speculation as to when the two will meet, with rumours circulating that Andy Burnham may split his time with Larry at 10 Downing Street and Axel in Manchester.

A friendly coalition

Cats Protection have issued advice for the Prime Minister, on ways to ensure a coalition should the dog and cat meet. Suggestions include scent pad swapping, gradual introductions through a barrier and rewarding calm and friendly behaviour around one another.

Fans of the Chief Mouser have been quick to defend the idea of any new arrivals at his home in London.

"Larry is the owner, Axel is just a temporary guest"  shared a cat lover on Facebook. "Axel can stay at his northern residence. Larry rules N.10!"  wrote another.
