A dog named Mamay was brought to the Humane Society of Broward County shelter in Florida, after she was found wandering the streets alone.
The rescuers immediately checked to see if she had a microchip.
An up-to-date microchip
To their great surprise, Mamay did have a microchip, and its details were up to date! This is how they discovered the dog's name was Mamay and that she was 11 years old. After making several calls, the rescuers finally managed to get in touch with Kathleen, Mamay's owner.
Kathleen was in shock when she received the call. To be absolutely certain it was Mamay, she asked the rescuers if the dog had a heart-shaped mark on her back. The rescuers confirmed straight away. There was no longer any doubt: it was indeed their dog, who had suddenly disappeared two long years ago. Her family had never stopped searching for her.
An emotional reunion
Kathleen is currently undergoing treatment for cancer. Deeply moved, she came to the shelter immediately to collect Mamay. The brave dog then went home and was reunited with all the comforts of her house.
The shelter took the opportunity of Mamay's story to remind pet owners that microchipping can play a crucial role in reuniting lost pets with their families, even years after they go missing. We are delighted to know that Mamay is finally back home and is now enjoying the warmth of her loving home.
