Giardia experiences

Hi everyone!

I’ve done a lot of research on Giardia online, but I’d really like to read more stories from people who’ve had to get rid of this parasite from their dog… but first, here’s my story.

About a month ago, I got an adorable Papillon puppy. I went to collect her from a breeder. On the day I was due to bring her home, I noticed her little tummy was a bit bloated, but I didn't pay much attention to it, especially as the breeder told me she was in good health, was up to date with all her jabs, and had been wormed recently.

As soon as she arrived home, she started having diarrhoea which alternated with stools that were more or less formed. Getting her to eat was a real struggle and she would sometimes skip meals. She was sleeping a lot too. I wasn’t happy about it, but I told myself it might just be the change of environment and that I’d wait a few days. As the situation didn’t improve, I booked an appointment with the vet.

The vet said that, on the face of it, there was nothing serious since she didn't have a temperature and was in good spirits (when she wasn't sleeping). He prescribed some probiotics but said that if she wasn't better in a few days, we’d have to run some tests to see if it was Giardia.

As you’ve probably guessed, we did the tests and BANG: Giardia.

So, the vet started her on a treatment (using an oxfendazole-based wormer).

She’s doing better already, but I’ve read that it can take months to completely clear this parasite… so I’d really love to hear some of your experiences… If your dog has had Giardia, how long did it take to cure them? What were they treated with? What other extra measures did you take to help the recovery?

Oh no, I'm so sorry to hear about your little girl! I hope she feels better soon.

What treatment have they put her on?

Hi everyone. I’m glad I found this forum about giardia so I can talk about it.

Here’s our story: my wife and I picked up a puppy from a breeder last Friday. The pup vomited after just 15 minutes of the journey because we had an hour-and-a-half drive to get home.

We thought it was just travel sickness or the car heater, so we drove slowly and she seemed a bit better—just one more sick right before we got back. So, we put it down to stress. Once home, things seemed better, though her stools were soft but not runny. The breeder told us that was normal. Friday night went well; we were so happy, she’s a lovely little thing, weighing about 3.8 lbs at 2 months old.

On Saturday, we weren’t too worried at first, except she wasn't really eating. She played a bit and had lots of cuddles, but then she vomited four times with spasms and her stools were still soft. That’s when we started to worry. Saturday night was okay. But on Sunday it started again, with five or six bouts of vomiting even while she was sleeping on the sofa. At that point, we called the out-of-hours vet. Jena was admitted to the clinic at 5 pm. She was dehydrated, and they told us it was gastroenteritis and that it was life-threatening. We were in total shock. We picked our girl up on Monday evening—such a relief, we thought everything was going to be fine.

She had her treatment and a follow-up with the vet, but by Friday Jena was very weak, not eating much, had runny stools with worms in them, and was vomiting again. Straight back to the emergency vet. We called the breeder, but she wouldn't listen. She told us we were wrong to go to the vet and that we were the ones who made her sick—she claimed it was just a mild tummy bug and completely normal. Anyway... the next morning the news came: Jena has giardia. It’s a real blow, but we have faith as she’s being well looked after. We’re just desperate for an update.

Sorry for any typos, I'm just exhausted. I can’t wait to see some improvement.

    Thanks, everyone.

    You can't be too careful!

Jack is doing much better, thank you. His poos are back to normal, he's got a great appetite, and he's full of beans! He's sending some big "get well" licks to your pack!

    Keep us posted!

I’ve taken that on board, @DarkPhoenix, thanks for the great advice! I’ve decided to try a new vet (fingers crossed they’re a good one...).

I hope Jack is doing better...

No, Milbemax isn't effective against every parasite, and yes, you really should rotate your wormers—ideally every month—to prevent parasites from developing resistance. The only worming treatments that work for Giardia are Panacur and Dolthène. Definitely try to see a new vet, as it would be much better to get a proper prescription and, above all, a professional opinion on your dog’s stools; green poo doesn’t really look like Giardia.

I'm no vet, but I think the main thing is that the parasites don't build up a resistance to the wormer! 😉

Good luck with the search for a new vet!

Hi Julieta, thanks for your reply.

I’ll mention switching wormers to the vet next time then. I also reckon (well, it makes sense to me) that changing the worming treatment every now and then might be a good idea... I figure if the body gets used to the same one, it’ll become less effective.

    Hello Zeithelei!

No, Milbemax doesn't cover all parasites. Not giardia, anyway... :/

You could try the chemist and explain the situation so they can give you some Panacur or Dolthène if your vet is being difficult. What are you using to worm your puppies? Because not all of them work on every type of parasite. Hi DarkPhoenix, I’ve just checked and the wormer the vet gave me is Milbemax. Do you think that one is effective against everything? Anyway, I gave it to both of them this morning and I’ll see if the little one’s poo gets any firmer :)

That’s great news for Lucy :) And I hope she never catches that nasty bug ever again...

Mine scoffs absolutely everything. I have to keep a constant eye on him when we're out on the street. So you’re right, it might just be an upset tummy. Still, I’d rather keep an eye on everything just for peace of mind, so I don’t have to worry at the first sign of a runny poo :)

    Have a lovely day!!
