Giardia experiences

Hi everyone!

I’ve done a lot of research on Giardia online, but I’d really like to read more stories from people who’ve had to get rid of this parasite from their dog… but first, here’s my story.

About a month ago, I got an adorable Papillon puppy. I went to collect her from a breeder. On the day I was due to bring her home, I noticed her little tummy was a bit bloated, but I didn't pay much attention to it, especially as the breeder told me she was in good health, was up to date with all her jabs, and had been wormed recently.

As soon as she arrived home, she started having diarrhoea which alternated with stools that were more or less formed. Getting her to eat was a real struggle and she would sometimes skip meals. She was sleeping a lot too. I wasn’t happy about it, but I told myself it might just be the change of environment and that I’d wait a few days. As the situation didn’t improve, I booked an appointment with the vet.

The vet said that, on the face of it, there was nothing serious since she didn't have a temperature and was in good spirits (when she wasn't sleeping). He prescribed some probiotics but said that if she wasn't better in a few days, we’d have to run some tests to see if it was Giardia.

As you’ve probably guessed, we did the tests and BANG: Giardia.

So, the vet started her on a treatment (using an oxfendazole-based wormer).

She’s doing better already, but I’ve read that it can take months to completely clear this parasite… so I’d really love to hear some of your experiences… If your dog has had Giardia, how long did it take to cure them? What were they treated with? What other extra measures did you take to help the recovery?

My 5-month-old pup has it too. We’ve done a first course of treatment: 5 days of Panacur, a 15-day break, and then another 5 days of Panacur, but she’s still got runny, yellow and really foul-smelling poo. I'm going to give the vet another ring to see what to do next. I’ve heard that Grapefruit Seed Extract (GSE) is supposed to help it clear up; has anyone ever tried giving that to their dog?

    Hi.

Have you been in touch with the breeder? They might have an idea of what’s going on, even though your vet has already made a diagnosis. Did your puppy seem poorly before you brought him home? It’s mentioned in this thread that Panacur can be quite harsh for a puppy—I’m not questioning your vet's advice, of course. Have you had any stool samples tested yet? None of my dogs have ever had giardia; I’ve just been reading up on it in this post. I hope your puppy gets better soon.

Hi everyone! I bought a two-month-old puppy from a breeder a week ago, and right from her first stools, we noticed severe diarrhoea (it was like water). We took our little Litchi to the vet, who immediately put her on antibiotics (Flagyl) as well as Panacur and charcoal. In just one week, we’ve had to take her back to the vet three times to put her on a drip because she was so weak. She’s currently been hospitalised for two days now, and the vet doesn’t know yet if she’s going to pull through. He thinks she’s been ill for too long not to have some lasting damage; several parts of her digestive tract are affected, and we don’t know yet if it’s irreversible. We’re so worried—has anyone else been through this? It seems it is definitely Giardia, but given her state, it must be an acute case.

Hi, Thanks for your reply, but that doesn’t quite answer my question. I’m currently away from home and nowhere near a vet. Thanks anyway, irlem

Hi, I’d say so. I wormed mine even though they had giardia, and I’m glad I did because they actually had worms (well, at least one of them did). You might want to check the risk of mixing meds, though, as mine weren't on any treatment at the time. Have a good day!

    Hi everyone,

I’m new to the forum and I’ve just noticed you’re talking about giardia. My puppy is currently being treated for it with Flagyl. After several months, the vet has asked for a poo sample to be tested. I deworm him regularly, but I have a question: should I still give him his worming treatment while he’s on this medication or not? Could anyone help me out?

    Thanks,

    Irlem

    Hi there,

Is this thread still active? I’m having the same issue with our two puppies—they’ve also tested positive.

They have access to a garden and can come and go as they please. How on earth do I go about disinfecting everything??

They started their treatment yesterday and they’re five months old. This has been going on since we got them from the rescue centre and I’m really worried about one of them who is quite skinny; the other has less energy but puts on weight more easily.

Anyway, this bacteria is a total nightmare.

    Thanks for your help.

    Have a good day.

Boulis, I’ve just remembered that you mentioned in a previous post that Jena was being treated with Panacur... Is she still taking it? Would you consider asking your vet if it might be a bit too strong for her? I don’t mean to question your vet’s professional judgement at all, but I know that back at the start (when Lucy was three and a half months old and weighed only about 3.5 lbs), mine was reluctant to give her such a heavy treatment. He prescribed a milder alternative which was much easier for a little one to handle. Admittedly, it wasn’t enough to completely clear the giardia, but it helped keep it under control and improved the situation until Lucy was big enough to cope with a stronger course of treatment.

Anyway, I really hope there’s been some improvement with Jena! Hang in there!

I’m crossing my fingers too! He’ll pull through though!! He’s a real little fighter! And yes, do keep going with your case against that so-called breeder!

Sending strength to the little one, I’ve got everything crossed for her! These little things are tougher than they look; she’ll pull through, come on! I also don’t understand your breeder’s attitude at all. When Jack was poorly and we didn't know it was Giardia yet, I’d posted about it on Facebook. Since she’s a friend of mine on there, she commented and asked me to ring her straight away so I could explain what was going on. She told me, "It’s definitely Giardia," and admitted he could have easily picked it up at her place when we left him for a week’s boarding back in September. Honestly, I don’t see why they act like it’s a crime or such a massive deal. You can catch bugs anywhere, whether you're a dog or a human. I just don't get why breeders find it so hard to admit it might have started at their place.
