Boubou has eaten sanitary towels...

Hi everyone!

I'm back on the forum to share today's disaster.

The title says it all: my little monster has eaten a sanitary towel, plastic wrapper and all.

As soon as I realised, I called the vet. We've got an appointment in 2 hours for an examination and an ultrasound.

Given the size of the thing compared to my girl, and what it's made of, the vet surgery doesn't recommend waiting for it to pass like other small items might, and they want to examine her before advising on what to do.

So here I am, worried sick, just waiting for the appointment time to roll around. It happened during the night, so it's too late to induce vomiting. I'm not really sure what's going to happen next.

As for how on earth she got her paws on the pad, let's just say my sister will definitely be sleeping out on the porch tonight.

I'd be grateful for any info on pets swallowing similar objects, especially if you've got any reassuring stories!

Oh dear, poor little soul. Mind you, you’ve got guinea fowl necks (which are roughly the same size as chicken necks), quail, rabbit front quarters... Same as for @Doudou, have you thought about getting a Pet Wellness Life Scan done for him? And if the worst comes to the worst, for my old lad with his multiple allergies, I used to get the 'Real Nature' freshwater range from the big pet superstores, and it suited him really well.

Be Cool: I’m not really sure what we’ll do for meaty bones if we can’t do chicken!

If it turns out that chicken is indeed the problem, I’m afraid we’ll sadly have to go back to dry food!

Misanthrope: Yes, we might have been out of the woods if the operation had gone ahead. But if the issue is really her digestive system itself, it probably would have happened anyway!

To give her digestive system a rest, I’m just going to cut out chicken for a start, for today at least. The vet mentioned hypoallergenic dry food on Friday; I’m meant to talk to her about it again this evening. If I can find a grain-free one, we'll go with that.

I’m really starting to lose hope, and it breaks my heart to see her so poorly.

And this heat isn't helping matters! I really hope you manage to let her digestive system settle down. I still think it would have been better to have that bloody towel surgically removed straight away! Just eight days for the healing and it would have been over and done with. A foreign body "sitting" in a stomach and then the intestines for three weeks – imagine the damage! Anyway, hang in there because you must be absolutely fed up with it all! Sending lots of strokes to Minnie!

Oh no, I hadn't caught up with all the latest updates... It’s going to be a real nightmare if she’s intolerant to chicken, given how big she is!

Hi everyone, and thanks for your lovely messages :)

So, a quick update on Friday:

The appointment was running really late; they had a major emergency which caused total chaos at the clinic. Minnie and I were waiting patiently in the waiting room for the vet to see us, when Minnie was pounced on by two over-excited Huskies.

She's scared of big dogs – we're working on it – but this has just undone months of hard work.

We were both pretty shaken up.

The visit was already off to a bad start, and I was in a right state before I even got there, so that really was the final straw.

Once the vet arrived, here's what was said:

    - sluggish digestive system, slow digestion (she had been fasting but her stomach wasn't empty)

    - all clear on the most common chronic illnesses

    - before starting any tests, it seems best to see how her stomach handles easily digestible food (apparently a raw diet can be too much hard work for her tummy if it's struggling)

So, a change in diet to give her system a rest.

Except it's been a total disaster. Poor thing, her stools are firmer but they're just coming out uncontrollably... She keeps having accidents in the house despite being let out every hour.

She even weed on the sofa (she must really have no choice to do that).

With the rice in her meals, she's got gas and is really bloated. In just two days, she’s become a total barrel. Just like when she was on dry food.

Personally, I suspect a simple chicken intolerance.

I was mostly giving her chicken while she was poorly, and I think that's the issue: on Thursday and Friday she only had beef, and she did a perfect poo on Friday evening.

I called the vet back, and she told me to go back to her normal diet and indeed try it without chicken if I really think that's it. On her end, she's discussing it with her colleagues to get their thoughts.

If it’s not that, I feel like we’ll have exhausted all the "standard" possibilities.

I've just caught up with the latest updates. I was so pleased too, thinking it was all going to have a happy ending and that it was more of a scare than anything else, especially since the little one was in such good hands... but it seems like that business with the towel was hiding something else. Poor thing, she must be absolutely exhausted and you must be so stressed out. Keep us posted — what did the vet find and what’s the treatment?
