My Cocker's hair everywhere

My Cocker is incredibly affectionate, docile, brilliant! He’s a wonderful dog. You really do have to take him out very often when you live in a flat, which is the case for me.

I have a question and it’s MY BIGGEST PROBLEM: I FIND HAIR EVERYWHERE (even in my bedroom which is kept shut and even in my bedroom wardrobes?? There’s hair even in my underwear; the hoover is clogged up, and my washing machine (which I’d only just bought) is already showing a red light, indicating that the filters are blocked (but they’re inaccessible because they're at the back of the machine)... Does anyone else have the same problem? And please, how do you manage? I clean the floors three times a day, I’ve had to throw away all my socks... It’s a total nightmare (partly because the building management only allows small dogs and I’ve had to take my Cocker to a very good rescue; I’m absolutely heartbroken, all I want to do is run and get him back, hold him tight and move out of here. But before that, I need to solve the hair problem because I’m already allergic to it and I can’t live surrounded by hair, it turns my stomach, it’s just awful)

Please, HELP ME. THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR REPLIES

Your neighbours haven't got the right to harass you over the dog; there’s no ban on keeping a dog in a flat.

But if he’s in a rescue centre, someone else will just adopt him...

I don’t really follow what’s going on here, but regarding the fur: an English Cocker Spaniel needs regular brushing and professional grooming. And yes, they shed constantly, all year round. I’ve got hair everywhere in my house too – on my clothes, furniture, blankets, the bed, carpets, etc., and in every single room, including the bathroom and the loo. My "going out" clothes (for work and so on) are kept in a sealed wardrobe (especially as I love wearing black and my dogs have white fur), separate from my everyday house clothes. I get changed in the bathroom and my pups aren't allowed to jump up at me before I head out (well, maybe just a few kisses ;-) and I hoover twice a week, but the hair is always embedded in everything regardless. If you’re allergic to dog hair, definitely don’t get this kind of breed....

I’m so sorry to hear that, it must be a really difficult time for you. I feel even worse for saying this, but in my experience with my Chihuahua, I have to hoover at least once a day and there’s still fur everywhere... Unfortunately, other than just putting up with it and giving everything a good go with a lint roller, I don’t really have a solution... To try and keep the shedding under control, you’ve got to give your little ones a proper brush every day, but it’s just something that never truly stops...

When my Bichon passed away, I was in a really bad way, so my parents got me this KC-registered English Cocker Spaniel. I’ve discovered what a wonderful breed they are and I absolutely adore him. Regarding the shedding, of course, I moved heaven and earth and went to the vet. I was told that, for one thing, just like with their teeth, puppies lose their baby coat to make way for their adult coat; then there was the seasonal moult on top of that, plus a mistake by the staff at the garden centre who sold me "low calorie, weight-loss" dry food. The combination of those three things caused the massive hair loss. I’m really hoping that future moults won’t be quite so extreme? I’ve never seen anything like it in my life (especially since a Bichon is a dog that doesn't shed, so you can imagine the shock). As for the last point, yes, he is currently in a rescue because I was being constantly harassed. I was threatened with the police, people were always ringing my doorbell, and I was being followed when he was being house-trained to see if I was cleaning up after him properly... Honestly, living in a block of flats with these people all the time, I finally snapped and I regret it bitterly. I couldn't take any more. I had to call my dad because it made me physically sick to even think about taking him to the shelter, so I wasn't in any fit state to do it myself. I’ve spoken to people about it and they agree those neighbours definitely crossed the line; I’ve been told I can definitely file a harassment claim to get my dog back and also send a recorded delivery letter to the microchip database to reclaim him. It’s a private development and another owner had the same problem; he bought one of those anti-bark collars, and I ended up getting one too. It was discreet but I felt terrible about it, and now I understand how he felt and the harm they did to his dog. He’s moved house now, which is what I’m planning to do as well. My only real worry is the shedding issue, as this is my first Cocker; I’m worried I won’t be able to cope with hair being everywhere. This whole thing is really getting to me, which is why I’m asking for help. I hope that explains the situation a bit better, and thank you for such a quick reply.

    Hi there,

Sorry, I think you were trying to keep it brief, but I’ve got a bit lost with the details of your story.

Could you please walk us through the timeline again? Where did the dog come from? Is he in a rescue now?

What made you decide to get a dog in the first place?

Regarding the shedding, have you mentioned it to the vet? Excessive hair loss can be a sign of an underlying health issue...

Mind you, dogs do shed their coats regardless...

Sorry, I know that’s a lot of questions, but we need a bit more of the back story if we’re going to help you move forward...
