There are five different sizes of the German Spitz dog, ranging from the smallest, the Pomeranian, to the largest, the Keeshond. They are all cheerful, jovial and affectionate but reserved around strangers, which makes them good guard dogs. They are intelligent and docile, making them easy to train and suitable for many households, especially those with children.

The Poodle comes in four sizes (toy, miniature, medium and standard) and five different coat colours (black, white, grey, brown or apricot). They are very intelligent dogs who, despite their misleadingly fragile appearance, are actually very robust and resilient. Cheerful, playful, lovable and affectionate, Poodles can adapt to many different lifestyles.

pomapoo: Origins and history

The Pomapoo is a relatively recent hybrid breed, created by crossing the Pomeranian with the Poodle to meet the growing demand for small companion dogs that combine the best qualities of both parent breeds.

This crossbreed likely originated in the US during the 1980s or 1990s, when so-called designer dogs were becoming increasingly popular. Breeders aimed to blend the Pomeranian’s friendly and sociable nature with the intelligence and trainability of the Poodle.

Although the Pomapoo is not officially recognised by major kennel clubs such as The Kennel Club (KC) or the American Kennel Club (AKC), it is registered with hybrid breed organisations like the American Canine Hybrid Club (ACHC) and the Designer Dogs Kennel Club (DDKC). Thanks to its small size, often hypoallergenic coat, and affectionate nature, the Pomapoo has quickly become a favourite among families and city dwellers.

Training a pomapoo

To train a Pomapoo, use positive reinforcement and reward good behaviour with treats and praise. Keep sessions short and consistent to maintain focus.

Socialisation from an early age helps prevent shyness. As they are intelligent and eager to please, Pomapoos respond well to patience, encouragement, and structured training routines.

pomapoo: Purchase price

The price of a Pomapoo ranges from £500 to £1,600, depending on factors like location, breeder reputation and lineage.

Daily costs include quality food, grooming, pet insurance, and healthcare. Additional expenses, such as toys and training, should also be considered when budgeting for a Pomapoo.
