Pink discharge from my cat's vulva - HELP

Hi everyone, I’m looking for some advice. My cat Nala is just under a year old and she was in heat for the first time about 3 weeks ago (we have a male cat at home as well). Everything seemed fine, but for the last 3 days, Nala hasn't been moving around much and she’s been making little grunting noises while she sleeps or rests (she’s never done that before). She’s also started licking her back end constantly. Yesterday, when I checked her, there was some sticky pink liquid coming from her vulva and she’s still licking it. She’s still not feeling any better; she just finds a quiet spot and sleeps... I’m planning to call my vet on Monday to find out more and take her in... does anyone know what this might be? Or has anyone had a similar experience?

Pink discharge from my cat's vulva - HELP

I’ve attached two photos which might help clarify things. I’m really worried as Nala is quite delicate (she’s already been treated for cat flu before). Thanks in advance for all your replies.

I’m getting in touch as I’ve just seen your post.

We took our Nala to the vet, and they told us she’d been mated by a male but had lost the litter. To make matters worse, it had caused an infection, so they spayed her and performed a full hysterectomy.

This is one of the main symptoms of a womb infection, which is a life-threatening emergency with a very high risk of death from septicaemia.

Get to an emergency vet as soon as it's light!!!

Hi, I’m not sure if anyone will see this, but my cat, who is nearly 15, has been doing the same thing for the past two days. She was in heat a month ago, but I doubt it’s because of that. Does anyone know what it could be? She’s never done this before.

Unlike dogs, cats don't bleed when they're in heat. Any discharge from the vulva is never normal and can be caused by various issues, some more serious than others. In any case, your vet will need to start treatment as quickly as possible. If she’d had a miscarriage, you probably would’ve noticed, unless it happened during the night and she ate the kittens. There can be some bleeding after a miscarriage. Regardless, you need to get her to an emergency vet right away.

Hi, could this be a miscarriage? Considering she mated less than a month ago? I’ve done loads of searching and haven't found anything to suggest it’s normal for there to be blood coming from her vulva, even if a cat is pregnant. Thanks in advance.

    Are you sure it's blood?

Try testing it with some hydrogen peroxide: it should foam up.

My point was more that she’s likely about to give birth, as I reckon her first season was earlier than you think. A cat's pregnancy lasts about 60 days on average; miscarriages are rare at the one-month mark, but everything is a bit more complicated when it's their first time. It’s a very good thing the vet is seeing her tomorrow, and if they suggest cancelling, make sure you insist!!

    Hi there,

She’s either pregnant or she’s in heat. I doubt her first heat was only three weeks ago; it’s more likely her first one went unnoticed, which happens a lot with young cats.

    Hi,

Thanks... it’s worrying, still seeing pink spots today... I’ll be so glad to see the vet tomorrow.
