Hi everyone.

I clipped my cat's claws yesterday morning; as far as I recall, I didn't cut them too short and he seemed fine yesterday.

Just now, I noticed that on most of his claws, either the claw is gone leaving just a stump, or they are damaged and covered in dirt (he goes outside). I tried to disinfect some of the claws but it's clearly hurting him. This isn't the first time it's happened to him.

I'm going to call the vet tomorrow, but in the meantime, what would you advise?

I don't think I cut anywhere near the quick (I clip his claws very often and this never happens, but he didn't used to go out), so perhaps the fact I clipped them and then he used a wooden plank to scratch on didn't help 😓😓

    You’ve done the right thing booking an appointment for tomorrow. The fact that several claws are damaged or broken, and especially that it’s painful, could indeed be down to some kind of trauma: your cat might have caught or torn their claws while out and about, particularly if they were shorter than usual after being clipped.

    In the meantime, avoid handling or clipping the claws any further and try to keep the paws clean. If there is any dirt, you can gently rinse the ends with clean water or saline solution, without rubbing. Avoid using any irritating disinfectants or human creams without advice from a vet.

    I would also keep them indoors until the check-up to prevent further injury or the risk of a wound getting infected.
