Cat weak 3 days after being spayed

Hi, my cat was spayed about 3-4 days ago. She spent the first three nights at the vet's. When I brought her back on Saturday evening she seemed a bit traumatised and weak, which I thought was normal. She was coming to sleep on my lap and was still eating a little bit.

But today she seems even weaker than yesterday. She's limping and her back left leg trembles when she walks. She won't eat anything at all now and spends the whole day sleeping :'( I'm getting quite worried. Please let me know what I can do to get her to eat.

Thanks

Hi there; sorry, I missed your message, I’m not a very active member on here.

Anyway, it was an intramuscular injection, so I massaged the muscle where she’d had the jab and by the next day she was running around again ^^

    Hi there,

Your situation sounds very similar to mine.

My cat was fine for about 2 days after being neutered, but then he started throwing up everything he ate. So, I took him back to the vet, and they gave him an injection—I can't remember what for exactly—because the anaesthetic had caused some digestive issues. Or, what seems more likely to me, he must have had a fall, because he was also limping.

It was probably a fall even though I'd kept him isolated after his op.

The vet told me that the groove that holds his kneecap isn't deep enough, which caused a partial hip dislocation that keeps popping in and out, so he was limping quite a bit. The only thing to do in the future if it gets worse is an operation.

He had this for about a fortnight, with some days where he limped a lot, but he's been fine since and rarely limps now.

The vet offered to give him painkillers, but since my cat is a nightmare to catch and the symptoms have mostly cleared up, he hardly ever limps now.

Maybe it’s that? Does your cat limp all the time, all day long?

I NOTICED AT THE TIME THAT HIS KNEECAP WOULD POP OUT WHENEVER HE STRETCHED.

Otherwise, I’d advise you to see a vet just to be sure where it’s coming from.

The neutering itself can’t cause a limp, but it was likely a fall because he wasn't fully awake after the anaesthetic.

Hi there, My cat’s situation is very similar to yours. After she was spayed, she started limping on her back left leg, which is really worrying me. I’d love to know what you did to get her walking normally again? And how long did it take? Thanks

    Hi there,

I’m so glad to hear the little one is doing better. She’s definitely on the mend, so try not to worry more than you have to. I completely understand what an emotional shock this has all been for you, but you’re the owner and the adult here, so stay strong. We’re all thinking of you and the little girl 👌

Hi everyone, just wanted to give an update on my cat, just in case anyone else comes across this thread through Google. She’s doing so much better, she’s asking for food and is even running around and jumping up on the table! She’s limping a lot less on her legs (I spent the evening massaging her thigh, as a few people who’ve had the same problem recommended it). That said, she’s still a little bit wobbly... I’m really hoping she’ll make a full recovery :) I’m so relieved, I spent the whole of yesterday evening in tears... but things are okay now! ^^

No more vets. I'm just going to cling to the hope that she pulls through, like the vet told me.

You should head to another vet first thing tomorrow. Either they’ll spot something the other one missed and get your girl sorted, or they’ll confirm the diagnosis and you’ll at least have some peace of mind. Best of luck.

You know, there are some vets who are capable of admitting when they've made a mistake, but more often than not, they’ll just tell you everything is fine and that there haven’t been any slip-ups. I’m not a vet and I don’t know yours, so I won’t presume to criticise them, but I do think that vaginal bleeding and leg issues are quite strange for a ‘simple’ spay. One of my cats was spayed while pregnant; she didn't have any bleeding or any injections other than the ones to put her under before the surgery, and that was through a cannula in her front leg. I don’t know every vet’s way of working and maybe it even varies by country, but your cat is going through quite a lot for ‘just’ a spay. If things don’t improve in the next few days, you should definitely get a second opinion from another vet and tell them exactly what your current vet did.

Mine isn't paralysed. She's just unsteady on her feet and it hurts when she puts weight on it. The vet assured me that he didn't hit any nerves and that she’s going to get better. I’m finding this situation so hard to cope with that I’m thinking about suicide or throwing myself out of the window. But anyway, thanks for your support ^^"
