My cat's paws are spontaneously swelling up

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for some advice or similar experiences regarding an allergy my cat is dealing with. He’s a 5-year-old Persian and is strictly an indoor cat.

For the past few months, his paws (both front and back) have started swelling up spontaneously. It can be just one paw or several at a time.

I’ve obviously seen the vet several times, and they think it's a contact allergy, but it’s proving very difficult to pinpoint the exact cause. Every time they swell up, my cat is given a specific course of treatment, and usually, the swelling goes down within a couple of days. This happens regardless of the season, both in summer and winter.

At first glance, the swelling doesn't seem to cause him any pain; he’s happy for me to handle and touch his paws, and his behaviour hasn't changed at all. He’s still eating and drinking normally.

I’m at a complete loss, as I’ve already tried removing my plants (which he used to nibble on from time to time) and switched to a dust-free litter. I also clean the house using simple products like black soap and vinegar. I’d really love to find out what’s causing this swelling, especially so I can stop giving him treatments that might have harmful long-term effects on his health.

I’d really appreciate any thoughts or experiences if any of you have gone through something similar.

Thanks in advance! 🙏🏻

    Hi,

First of all, thanks for your reply. He did mention further tests, but for now, he’s just treated the swelling. I’ve been to see two different vets and neither of them has suggested doing these investigations.

I’m really worried; I’m scared it’s something serious and that we’re all missing it.

I’m posting this because the swelling came back yesterday, so I’m planning on calling the vet again today to see.

    Thanks for your help!

Hi, I’m writing to ask for your help to see if you’ve found a solution, because my cat Livio is going through the exact same thing right now and I don’t know what to do. I’ve already spent about £2,100 on my girlfriend’s cat and it’s still going on without the vets finding out what’s wrong. Up until now, he only had FAD (flea allergy), but since going to the vet, his front and back right paws and his right cheek have swollen up. They’ve swollen by 5cm in 12 hours and I’m completely at a loss. He’s doing nothing but sleeping even though he was fine before, and he feels burning hot. He’s not eating much or drinking very much. Help me!!!!!!

Hi there, Has your vet carried out any thorough tests to get a proper diagnosis? I find it a bit strange that they’re just treating it repeatedly, likely with steroids, without a clear answer. The swelling (oedema) in the paw could be down to an insect bite or poor circulation. It might be worth getting some heart imaging done to check for any abnormalities that could be causing circulation issues and this fluid build-up in the legs.
