Feline anorexia and hepatic lipidosis

Hi everyone,

Our 12-year-old female cat is spayed and was previously overweight. A few months ago, after we changed her dry food, she started eating less. She gradually lost weight, but we convinced ourselves it was simply because she didn't like the new food as much, and we were actually quite pleased she was getting into better shape. A week ago, we realised she had stopped eating entirely, wasn't using her litter tray, and had turned yellow. The vet told us she has jaundice caused by hepatic lipidosis (fatty liver disease). We thought she was losing weight naturally when she was actually slipping into anorexia 🥹. Since then, she's had IV drips, a stay at the vet hospital, a nasopharyngeal feeding tube, and is now back home. Unfortunately, despite all our efforts, she only eats tiny amounts, if anything at all. We feel completely helpless. We aren't sure what triggered it either. Was it the dry food, stress, a change in her routine... or an underlying illness?

In short, we're watching her fade away day by day without being able to help. Have any of you dealt with a similar situation? Do you have any advice or tips to encourage her to eat a little? We don't know who else to turn to before it's too late.

Any kind words or suggestions would be very welcome.

Thank you so much in advance for your help.

I know how you feel, it’s so distressing. My cat stopped eating one weekend and I didn't know what to do; in the end, he went to the vet and it turned out his liver was slightly affected. Is your girl at least drinking some water? I hope she gets better soon.

Hi, Hepatic lipidosis is unfortunately a dreadful vicious cycle in cats… a cat that stops eating breaks down its fat reserves too quickly, which overwhelms and blocks the liver, causing nausea that in turn prevents them from eating. At this stage, the absolute priority is ensuring nutritional intake by syringe feeding through the tube with a veterinary liquid food, split into 5 or 6 small, lukewarm meals a day. Warming the food helps to prevent stomach spasms and releases the aromas. Has your vet already prescribed an appetite stimulant (such as Mirtazapine, a gel applied to the inside of the ear flap)? This usually produces very good results. I understand how heartbreaking this situation is to go through. Watching your companion get weaker by the day while feeling helpless is deeply distressing. Please know that you’ve done the right thing by getting prompt veterinary care and doing everything you can at home! Sending lots of strength to you and your cat during this difficult time. Best wishes, Laure.
