My cat REFUSES to go outside anymore

Hi everyone,

For the past two weeks, my cat – who used to love going outdoors – has been getting really panicked and stressed whenever he goes into the garden. It happened overnight and we have no idea why.

The fur on his back starts twitching compulsively, you can see his expression change, and he gets all agitated looking around him. Within a few minutes, he bolts back into the house as if something were chasing him; he then hides, licks himself, and scratches himself for about 10 to 20 seconds before calming down.

It's clear he wants to go out, but he's just not at ease at all.

My husband and I have tried going out with him; he sticks to us like glue and won't leave our side. We stroke him and try to reassure him that everything is fine.

I’m completely at a loss and don't know what to do anymore.

He’s currently on Zylkene and his worming treatment is up to date.

I’m hoping he’ll settle down with time, but as the days go by, I’m starting to have my doubts.

What should I do?

Thanks 🙏

Severine

In my opinion, even though there are plenty of benefits to letting a cat go outdoors, it’s very dangerous for them to go out on their own. So, going outside with them is a good idea, but if they don’t want to go, don't force them. Here is a fact: outdoor cats have a shorter life expectancy than indoor cats for several reasons. It’s up to you what you do with that information.

    Hi there,

It’s most likely that your cat has had a traumatic experience outdoors: a scrap with another animal (cat, dog, bird, ferret...), an unpleasant encounter with a person, a car passing too close, or a fall...

They now associate the outside with a stressful and dangerous environment, so you shouldn't force them to go out—just let it be their choice. They’ll head back out when they feel ready. In the meantime, play with them indoors and perhaps try a pheromone diffuser.

If the problem persists, you could see a veterinary behaviourist.

    Have a lovely day.

    Hi there,

Don't force him to go out; if he feels safer indoors, it's really up to him. He might have had a bit of a scrap with a dominant tom cat.

A cat that’s been spooked for one reason or another takes a while to settle back down. You’ve just got to wait for them to calm down on their own.
