My little Louna is in a really bad way...

About ten days ago, I took her to the vet because she’d stopped eating altogether; she was hiding away and even seemed scared of me.

My cat is in a really bad way...

It was a right struggle getting her to the vet because she absolutely hates travelling... but anyway...

The vet diagnosed her with gingivitis, so she was put on Dermipred (steroids) for 6 days and an antibiotic—I can't remember the name of it now.

She seemed better for the first five days, but since then she’s been going downhill day by day, and today I can't even get her to eat a thing.

I called my vet back, and they’ve advised me to keep her on the Dermipred for another 5 or 6 days, but I honestly don't know how to get the meds into her now. Does anyone have any suggestions? Has this ever happened to your moggy too? I'm desperate for some help, please. Thanks in advance... :(

Hi there, I’ve got the same issue with one of my cats (she’s a female with chronic viral gingivitis, currently on treatment). Every 4 weeks, Lisa (that’s her name :D) gets a steroid jab (I’ll check the name of the medication for you) to soothe the pain in her gums, which get very, very inflamed and red. Sometimes we manage to stretch it out a bit longer (even 5 to 6 weeks) between injections. It’s been like this for 2 years and everything seems to be going fine (except for the last 2-3 days before her jab). Basically, we take her to the vet when we see she can’t eat anymore (even if she’s hungry, she can’t chew and yowls quite loudly – she’s suffering, poor thing). To put it simply, she’s the one who tells us when it’s time to go. There’s no point giving you my vet’s details as they aren't based in the UK. This is just to give you an idea (maybe a simpler solution for your little Louna). Wishing you lots of strength and the best of luck with your kitty! catacbr

Unfortunately, I don't have any advice, but my heart goes out to you and Louna.

Feline calicivirus - has anyone dealt with this before?

I’m checking in with some news about Louna, and unfortunately, it’s not great...

She’s got a virus called calicivirus... it’s a right nasty thing and extremely difficult to get rid of.

Louna had her steroid jab yesterday and she’s on Antirobe for another 10 days.

The vet told me there isn't much that can be done to get clear of this sh...

She suggested a very expensive treatment, of course... with a 50/50 chance of it working.

I've been trying to read plenty of articles about this illness and most of them say there’s no miracle cure. The only way is to keep her comfortable with steroid injections, but obviously, that’s going to shorten her life expectancy.

I’m so sad and I feel completely helpless facing this.

She’s managed to eat a bit today, which is a relief. I bought her some cooked ham and she absolutely loved it; she was purring so loudly because she was so happy, and she’s fast asleep right now.

Anyway, I’ll do my absolute best to keep her comfortable.

Has anyone else had to deal with this horrible bug with their own kitty?

I’m open to any advice on how to make her feel better! Thanks in advance.

Thanks for all your advice everyone, anyway I'm off to the vet this evening..

I think he'll be feeling much better once he's on some anti-inflammatories..

That saucer is quite something, where on earth does she find these things? @MUISE33 I have a cat with inflamed gums; I blend his meat and add a bit of water. You definitely need plenty of patience with our little fur babies! Euqui is right, he had diarrhoea—carrot baby food and some tummy-settling medicine did the trick.

That’s why jars of baby food can be a good temporary fix. Since it might be a bit thick, just add a splash of water so it can pass through a syringe; it’ll help keep her hydrated, too. If she refuses the syringe, try using your finger, and do it somewhere other than where her food bowl is. In the lounge, for example, or on the sofa—somewhere she normally feels safe and relaxed.

    Poor little mite...

I should also mention that I've tried everything – bowls, saucers, plates, even cardboard ones... but nothing's worked.

    She's in pain.

I hadn't looked at it like that, Calico. I have to admit, jocya’s posts really do have a tendency to bring out my inner pitbull! ;) Well yeah, she’s hungry, poor thing… This nasty business is taking ages to clear up, isn’t it?
