Tummy feels hard to the touch

Evening everyone,

Yesterday afternoon, while stroking my cat Jym (who's 18 months old), I noticed his tummy felt harder than usual. However, his poo is normal, he's as regular as clockwork and there don't seem to be any worms (at least I haven't seen any). Otherwise, his belly isn't bloated and is its usual size, and his behaviour is exactly the same as always: he's eating normally, sleeping, playing, tearing around and jumping all over the place... I've also noticed that when I rub his tummy (where it feels hard), he seems to love it (as usual), so it doesn't seem to be hurting him.

On top of that, I started transitioning him between two brands of dry food just over a week ago, and he's currently on a 50/50 mix of the old and new stuff.

Does anyone have any thoughts on what it could be? Should I be worried? Could it be down to the change in dry food? Thanks for your help.

My kitten had a hard tummy but also had diarrhoea; it turned out to be parasites (invisible to the naked eye). Since your cat doesn't have diarrhoea, it might not be that, but worms are still a possibility even if you can't see them.

Get to your vet... a hard tummy is never a good sign...

Just because you can't see any worms, it doesn't mean your cat hasn't got them... I'd still recommend a wormer, and definitely a trip to the vet if it doesn't clear up or if they show any other symptoms.

No, it shouldn’t be anything serious if he’s not in pain, but sometimes cats don’t like having two different types of dry food. So, I’d suggest you pick out a bag of dry food for him yourself (go for the one with the fewest nasties, like preservatives...) and if it persists, go and see a vet. 👌
