Tummy appearance 24 hours after giving birth

Hi everyone,

Our cat gave birth to two kittens 24 hours ago. This isn't her first litter; as far as I know, she’s had at least two before this (the first was two live kittens and the second was one live kitten she had outdoors, as she was apparently an abandoned cat).

However, her tummy is still big and hard (it feels like a lump on each side). She’s eating, drinking, purring, using the litter tray, nursing, and cleaning her kittens. She doesn't have any unusual discharge and hasn't had any more contractions.

Is it normal for her belly to stay big 24 hours after giving birth, or could it be a sign that there are more kittens in there?

I'm having the same issue... my cat had her kittens last night and her tummy feels quite hard. She’s asking for fusses, purring, eating and drinking, looking after her little ones and moving about.

Hi there, my cat gave birth to three lovely kittens yesterday morning around 9am, but nothing has happened since even though her belly is still swollen. Is it possible for her to give birth more than 24 hours later? She’s eating and using her litter tray, but is it dangerous to wait? Thanks for your replies.

Hi everyone, I know I'm three years late to this, but I could really do with some advice. My girl had two beautiful kittens this morning and everything's going well, but she has a very hard lump at the bottom of her belly. I've read all your messages but I just need some reassurance before I decide whether to call the out-of-hours vet. I've seen your stories about how it can take a bit of time, but how can I tell if she's alright if she's not meowing and doesn't seem to be in pain? Thanks for your help. Is everything okay now????????? I've got the same issue—my cat gave birth last night but there was only one kitten, and her belly is still swollen. Should I wait or call the vet?

Hi everyone, I know I’m about three years late to this thread! I’m looking for some advice – my girl gave birth to two beautiful little kittens this morning and everything seems to be going well. The only thing is, she has a really hard lump at the bottom of her belly. I’ve read through your posts and everything, but I just need some reassurance before I decide whether or not to call the emergency vet. I’ve seen your stories about how it can sometimes take a while between births, but how can I tell if she’s actually okay, considering she isn’t meowing and doesn’t seem to be in any pain? Thanks for your help.

    BUMP

I’m not sure of the answer myself, maybe another member can help?

Otherwise, you’ll need to see the vet... I hope everything is alright.

Hi, my cat had 9 kittens yesterday afternoon (her first litter). 2 were stillborn — they were in the same sac so I reckon they were twins. Another one died last night, so there are 6 left... however, she’s got a lump in her tummy and I’m starting to worry. She’s eating and drinking, but she had an accident in my bed last night :-( she’s never done that before... can you give me some advice? It’s not easy finding a vet over the weekend. Thanks in advance.

Hi, thanks for your reply. Everything went well; as it turns out, there was indeed one more kitten born during the night between Tuesday and Wednesday, so just over a day after the first two.

I once had a litter of kittens where two of them were born more than 24 hours after the first four. If you can still feel a "lump" on each side, it’s possible there are still more kittens on the way. Once the whole lot are out, her belly will feel all saggy ^^ EDIT: I’ve just realised I’m two days late to this, I hope everything went well or that you managed to get hold of a vet.
