Tummy appearance 24 hours after giving birth

Hi everyone,

Our cat gave birth to two kittens 24 hours ago. This isn't her first litter; as far as I know, she’s had at least two before this (the first was two live kittens and the second was one live kitten she had outdoors, as she was apparently an abandoned cat).

However, her tummy is still big and hard (it feels like a lump on each side). She’s eating, drinking, purring, using the litter tray, nursing, and cleaning her kittens. She doesn't have any unusual discharge and hasn't had any more contractions.

Is it normal for her belly to stay big 24 hours after giving birth, or could it be a sign that there are more kittens in there?

My cat gave birth about 4 hours ago and she’s only had one kitten, but she’s still got a big lump in her tummy. Should I be worried???

Important point that applies to all cat breeds:

Cats have blood groups just like we do. I was at the GCCF on Sunday and someone explained to me that queens are generally either N/N or type B.

If the mum is type B and a kitten is type A because of the dad, the B antibodies in the mother’s milk will kill the type A kitten. In this case, it’s vital to separate the mum and the kitten and bottle-feed the little one instead.

If both the mum and the kitten are type B, there’s no problem at all.

If the mum is NN, there's no issue either. Type A and B kittens can drink her milk safely.

(You really do learn something new every day!)

Hi there, Since the little one has already been passed, it won't cause an infection. However, it would be sensible to take your cat (and the kitten) to the vet first thing tomorrow morning to make sure that was definitely the last one and that everything is alright. Speak soon.

Hi everyone, I’m posting here because my cat gave birth to two kittens yesterday; one survived, but the other sadly passed away within the hour. She seemed okay and was eating and using her litter tray, but then this morning she delivered another one which was stillborn—it likely suffocated in the womb. My vet told me it’s not an emergency, but I’m really worried about her catching an infection since the kitten was stuck inside for 24 hours. Thanks in advance for your advice.

Good evening, was she behaving normally before those last two kittens came out? As if she’d finished?

I once had a litter of kittens where two were born more than 24 hours after the first four. If there’s a "lump" on each side, it’s possible there are still more kittens on the way. Once the whole lot are out, her belly will look all saggy ^^ EDIT: I’m two days late replying, I hope everything went well or that you managed to get hold of a vet.

Hi everyone, my cat’s been giving birth today. She’s trying to push the last one out but she can’t seem to get it out. I’m getting a bit worried because there’s just a small white lump (maybe the placenta?) poking out, but not all the way. It seems to be stuck.

Hi, my cat gave birth to two kittens yesterday, but sadly one was stillborn. I'm worried because her tummy feels very soft, but there are two things hanging down from her belly. Should I wait or take her to the vet?

I think it’s definitely possible because a female cat can be impregnated by two (or even more) males a day or two apart, so the kittens themselves can also be born a day or two apart normally, although that’s not always the case.
