Thoughts on my girl's post-spay scar?

Hi everyone,

I'm posting here because I have a few questions about my little girl's scar after her spay. She had her op on Friday morning, the 7th. I picked her up at 5:30 pm and had to take her back to the vet the next day because she wasn't eating, but everything was fine (the vet checked the swelling, made sure the stitches were secure, and took her temperature twice just to be safe).

The incision is quite long because the vet also repaired an umbilical hernia at the same time, which is why they went in through the belly rather than the sides. She has to wear a cone, but there's no traditional dressing; instead, they used Aluspray, which has left the whole area looking silver.

She is acting completely normal. She's desperate to play and run around, but we've kept her in one room to prevent that. We let her wander around the house for a bit in the evening under supervision so she doesn't get too hyper. But the day before yesterday, she managed to jump onto a chair, which gave us a massive fright as we were told no jumping at all. It just happened so fast...

I'd really appreciate some advice from anyone with experience in this, as it's the first time I've had a cat spayed. I'm worrying about absolutely everything and don't know what's normal, what's odd, or what warrants a mad dash to the vet. I tend to lean towards that last option every time... I love her so much.

First photo: her scar yesterday. I thought it looked a bit red, so I sent it to my vet. Since she's acting normally and wearing a cone to stop any licking, he said there was nothing unusual and that I shouldn't touch the scar (as if I'd dare...).

Second photo: Taken just now. She knocked over her water bowl, and while she was lying down, I checked to see if she'd got wet. Thankfully she's dry, but the appearance of it caught my eye. Is this normal 4 or 5 days after being spayed? I think it looks even redder and there's a bit of yellow. It doesn't seem to smell bad. So I don't know if it's normal, just okay, or a problem. As the silver spray is gradually fading, maybe the "real" colours of the scar are just shocking me for no reason. I should mention I've already sent another email to the vet with this photo—he must be sick of me by now, but I'd rather be a bit of a nuisance than miss something. I'd love to hear your thoughts while I wait for him to reply.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Thoughts on my girl's post-spay scar?

To me, the wound looks like it’s healed up well... Mind you, I’m not a vet... but don’t panic if she takes her cone off every now and then. There’s very little chance of her being able to reopen the wound, and as long as you keep it clean, there’s no risk at all.

    Thanks for your reply.

The vet thinks everything is fine and there’s no need to do anything. We just have to give them a call if the look of the scar changes. So we’re a bit more reassured, even though it’s really hard to keep an eye on her all the time with the cone, now that she’s figured out how to take it off.

Cats are just like us—they don't all heal at the same rate. Drawing on my experience as a nurse, that scar looks really neat; I can't fault it. If you want some peace of mind, you can dab it with a bit of Betadine (the yellow bottle) on a gauze swab to disinfect it. It'll help dry it out, but it's looking immaculate. You can definitely rest easy.

Hi there, Oh, really? That makes me feel a bit better already. I wonder if my vet will say it’s fine to leave it as it is or if it needs a dressing or something. It’s only been 11 days, which seems a bit early for the stitches to be out. Thanks for your reply :) Xia.

I think that scar looks magnificent, a textbook example for a vet school.

    Hi everyone!

Just an update... We had a bit of a nasty shock this evening when we found that the little one had managed to get her cone off and pull out her stitches. Well, the threads were on the floor anyway. Here is a photo of the scar; just a reminder that she had her op on the morning of the 7th. I’ve sent an email to my vet, of course (it was too late to call), so I’ll get an answer tomorrow regarding what I should do.

What do you think? Does the scar look alright? If she really has pulled her stitches out, do you think she’s damaged the area too much? I put her cone back on as soon as I realised, but I don’t know how long she was without it or if she’s been licking the area much...

I won’t lie, we’re quite worried as it’s still very early days...

    Thanks for your replies!

    Haha, your vet sounds great!

Well, that’s good news then, now it’s just a case of waiting for it to heal up nicely.
