My kitten has really bad diarrhoea after being neutered

Hi, I had my 6-month-old kitten neutered on the 17th of September (two days ago) and he’s got really bad liquid diarrhoea. He’s only going to the toilet once or twice a day as usual, but I’m still worried. Is this a side effect of the anaesthetic? If so, will it clear up quickly? And can I give him a digestive paste like Pro-Kolin, or something like Smecta?

He often gets a bit of a runny tummy, but never anything like this.

Sorry for all the details lol and thanks for your replies.

    Hi,

Whenever my cat has loose stools but isn't going more often than usual and doesn't have any other symptoms, I sprinkle half a teaspoon of white clay powder a day over their dry food and within a few days the problem is sorted.

    Hi there,

Diarrhoea can be a side effect of surgery.

However, if it persists, or if your cat isn't eating or drinking properly, please take them to see your vet immediately for a further check-up.

Hi there, Anaesthesia can often be the culprit behind this kind of diarrhoea; it’s actually quite common. Personally, in cases of diarrhoea, I use Smectite (the cat version of Smecta, which is very palatable), and it clears the problem up really quickly. There are no side effects. If the diarrhoea lasts for several days, then give the vet a ring, but if it’s just a reaction to the surgery, it shouldn't last long.

    Hi there,

Give your vet a call; only they can tell you if a check-up and/or medication is needed (and which type).

Don’t try any self-medicating, especially so soon after an anaesthetic.
