My cat's ripping off her dressing

Right, my cat's just been spayed this morning, and ever since we brought her home, she's been licking and trying to pull her dressing off. We haven't got a cone, and it's impossible to get a proper bandage on her because she won't stop moving and hiding. The vets are closed now, so I've got no idea what to do at all... please help!!

She’s calmed down now, so I managed to get the sock on her, and I reckon it’ll hold until tomorrow, as long as she behaves.. ;)

No worries! Mind you, if she manages to get the sock off, you’ll have no choice but to put a cone on her or head back to the vet to have the dressing redone. They usually do that free of charge anyway, as it’s included in the surgery costs. That said, some cats don't bother with their stitches at all. Even if she does get the bandage off, she might just leave them alone, but it’s definitely more peace of mind to have something covering them.

OK, I'll give that a go straight away, thanks a lot :)

No, it’s not a problem, as long as the sock is clean. In fact, if she’s torn a bit off, it’ll at least let the scar breathe through the sock. :)

Okay :) But does it matter if the sock touches the stitches a bit? She’s just managed to pull one of them out...

As for the sock, make sure you pick one that isn’t too tight, of course. Just cut the toe off and slide it on :)

Be careful with the dressing when you’re putting it on, though; you don’t want the bandage to bunch up.

It should stay in place—it certainly did for my Kiara, anyway, and she preferred the sock a million times more than wearing a cone!

I'm going to try the sock trick! :) I'm home on my own and I can't get to the vet's.. Thanks!

Hi, you could either head to the emergency vet to get a new dressing put on since that one isn't sticking anymore, or to get a cone. Or you could do what I did: I cut up a large (clean) woollen sock to go around their middle and it worked quite well :) it’s definitely better than the cone, anyway!

    Here it is:
