Lump found one month after spaying - quite hard

Evening all.

I’m writing because my little 7-month-old Maya was spayed 1 month and 6 days ago now. When we went to have her stitches removed, the vet told me everything was spot on. While checking and feeling her scar to make sure all was well, I noticed she has a large lump that’s fairly hard.

I’m really worried and plan to call the vet first thing tomorrow morning.

I’m reaching out to you to see if I should be worried or not.

Looking forward to your replies.

    Hi there,

You've definitely done the right thing by contacting your vet.

A lump near a wound site can sometimes just be due to the healing process, which usually isn't anything to worry about unless it starts to get significantly bigger.

However, it could also be a hernia caused by the internal incision opening up; in that case, it really does need to be seen to as soon as possible.

Finally, it could be something completely unrelated to the neutering wound, such as a mass, an abscess, or a cyst. Your vet will be able to advise you once they’ve had a look at the lump and can take the appropriate action.

    I hope this helps.

Right then, it should all be fine. After 2 or 3 days, the scar should already look clean and healthy. That "lump" will disappear; the internal stitches need to dissolve, and that can take a bit of time.

When you press the hard lump, does it go back in? If so -> see a vet as it's a hernia. If not, then everything is normal; it’s just inflammation caused by the stitches (foreign bodies), and the lump will go away in a month or two.

Finding info online might reassure you, but calling the vet tomorrow is a very good idea.
