Irritated nipple

Hi everyone,

My little Nova, who is around 7 to 8 months old, was spayed on Tuesday 4th April 2017.

Behaviour-wise, she has recovered really well. The vet put a dressing on her which was staying on fine until now, but it has started rolling up at the top and bottom of her tummy, exposing the nipples that were shaved for the surgery. I've just noticed that she is constantly licking one nipple, which is red and looks slightly irritated.

I popped into the vet's quickly (without my cat); they didn't seem too concerned and gave me some Dermidine spray to use twice a day.

Has anyone else experienced this after their cat was spayed? Is it just because she's been shaved in that area and has started licking it frantically? Do you think the spray will sort everything out?

I’m attaching a little diagram (don’t laugh at my drawing! :) ) but I’m totally dotty about my cat and just want what’s best for her!

Thanks for reading.

Or a vet could come out to you, it’s the same thing really. They should definitely see one if it doesn't clear up after disinfecting it.

It would be best to take them to the vet, especially considering how young they are.

Disinfect the wound with some Betadine.

    Hi.

In my case, it’s about my kitten. She’s a female as well, but she’s only 3 months old. I’ve noticed she’s spending all her time licking one of her nipples. At first, it didn’t seem like anything to worry about, but while I was playing with her, I felt a hard lump on her tummy. And now I can see that as well as the nipple being red and hard, she’s got some sort of sores next to it. Should I take her to the vet? Or can I get one to do a home visit? The vet is miles away and I don’t have any way of getting her there, and I’m really worried it might be serious.

Hi, I’ve got the same problem with my cat after her spay a few days ago. I’ve just spotted that one of her nipples is red (just the one, I think), almost as if a wound on it has dried over. I was wondering if it’s serious if I don’t use any disinfectant on it?

Thank you so much for your reassuring reply! I’ve just managed the first spray—not without a bit of a struggle—but she tried to lick it and changed her mind straight away. The smell puts her off, so I’ll keep up with the two sprays a day and hope things settle down. She’s having her stitches from being spayed removed on Thursday 20th April, and I’ll ask my vet to double-check that everything is looking okay. Thanks again and have a lovely evening!

    Hi there,

There’s really nothing to worry about. As you’ve pointed out, the shaving might have caused a bit of inflammation. When they clip the fur before a spay, going over the nipples can be quite harsh and can cause tiny grazes which lead to inflammation. As a result, she’s licking the area.

Plus, based on your drawing, the irritation is only on one nipple. So, it’s very likely down to the clipping.

No need to worry then. Keep applying the antiseptic spray; it will prevent any secondary bacterial infections.

I hope this helps. Have a lovely evening!
