Clear slimy discharge from my cat's bum

Evening everyone, the day before yesterday we realised after quite a while that our cat wasn't himself and was very tired. We just thought it was because he’d been going out a lot lately...

Then yesterday we noticed he was leaking some fluid; we initially thought it was urine... But when we took him to the vet, we realised this slimy, clear liquid was actually coming from his bum...

He had a temperature of 39.5°C and had pretty much stopped eating.

The vet kept him in overnight and we picked him up today, though he's still not exactly 100%...

Does anyone know what this liquid could be or what might be causing it? Have any of you dealt with something like this before?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi everyone. My cat is showing the same symptoms. She’s on a drip at the vet's today and I’m worried sick. How are your cats doing today?

Hi, did your cat ever recover?! Mine has exactly the same thing yours had... (Slimy fluid, not eating, sleeping all the time, not moving). I don't know what to do! The vet has never seen anything like it.

Hello, I’m so sorry, my cat is going through the exact same thing as yours. She’s been wormed and I worm her every month; it was definitely worms at the start, but even though they're gone now she’s still not getting any better... she isn't eating or drinking at all, so I’m having to use a pipette to feed her. She spent a night at the vet's and the vet saved her life, but even though it started with worms, it’s all happening again. She’s had a full work-up and every test possible but unfortunately they can't find what's wrong... she only came home yesterday and today she’s had a massive relapse. We took her back and the vet gave her some strong medication, but it’s just leaking straight out of her bottom, and I’m still having to give her food and water by pipette. Honestly, I’m so scared for my cat because she’s lost so many pounds 😔 ever since she had those awful worms she’s been really struggling to fight back 🥺

Hi there, could you let me know how things turned out with your cat and what the diagnosis was? Mine has been showing the same symptoms since this morning; I could tell straight away that something wasn't right. I’m planning on going to the vet tomorrow as it’s Sunday and I’ve had bad experiences with out-of-hours vets in the past... I’m a bit of a worrier and I’m really concerned about him...

I agree, if there’s no improvement, you should see another vet. Your cat’s condition is quite worrying. Keep an eye out for dehydration. Maybe he’d take a tin of tuna with some added water? It’s too salty, but the priority is that he eats AND drinks. Sometimes tuna is enough to kickstart their appetite.
I’ve finally managed to get him to eat and drink a bit... I gave him some warm soup and he quite enjoyed it; I thought it would give him a bit of energy and at least it's something in his tummy.

You’re doing the right thing. :)

But I agree with the others—if there’s no improvement by Monday, you should see a vet again.

Hang in there and thanks for the update. :)

I agree, if he doesn't get any better, you should definitely see another vet for a second opinion. Your cat's condition sounds quite worrying. Do watch out for dehydration. Maybe he’d take some tinned tuna if you add a bit of water to it? It’s too salty normally, but the priority right now is that he eats AND drinks. Sometimes a bit of tuna is enough to kick-start their appetite again.

If I were you, I'd go and see another vet if things don't get any better.

The vet has just emailed me saying she understood our frustration about the lack of a clear diagnosis... but still no more answers.

Hi there, The vet was the one who actually examined him and saw that liquid, so how are we supposed to know more than he does? It might be worms, but then again, the vet should have known. I hope he’s up to date with his worming treatment.
