Clear slimy discharge from my cat's bum

Evening everyone, the day before yesterday we realised after quite a while that our cat wasn't himself and was very tired. We just thought it was because he’d been going out a lot lately...

Then yesterday we noticed he was leaking some fluid; we initially thought it was urine... But when we took him to the vet, we realised this slimy, clear liquid was actually coming from his bum...

He had a temperature of 39.5°C and had pretty much stopped eating.

The vet kept him in overnight and we picked him up today, though he's still not exactly 100%...

Does anyone know what this liquid could be or what might be causing it? Have any of you dealt with something like this before?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Is your cat doing any better? My cat’s got the same thing as yours and hasn’t eaten a thing since this morning. He’s really not well at all, and there’s some clear liquid coming from his bum...

Agreed, if things don't improve, you should see another vet. Your cat’s condition is quite worrying. Watch out for dehydration. Maybe he would take a tin of tuna with some water added? It’s too salty, but the priority is that he eats AND drinks. Tuna can sometimes help kick-start the appetite. I’ve finally managed to get him to eat and drink a little... I gave him some warm soup and he seemed to quite enjoy it. I thought it would give him a bit of energy and at least it’s something substantial in his stomach.

Hi, My cat seems to be doing the same thing. I noticed it earlier this afternoon. He’s passing a sort of sticky, yellowish discharge. He’s going to the litter tray a lot. I also thought he seemed a bit lethargic. I’ve got a vet appointment tomorrow at 5pm. I’ll try to get back to you and let you know what the vet says. 🤞🤞🤞🙏🙏🙏

You read some pretty worrying things on here, like feline panleukopenia 😯

I have a cat who had a symptom (a clear, odourless anal discharge) about a year ago, but since she was still eating and moving about normally, I figured I’d just keep an eye on her without panicking. Since she was nearly due for her next worming treatment anyway, I thought another dose wouldn't do any harm, so I wormed her.

In my case, I think the problem was linked to her being overweight. Let me explain:

Cats have anal glands that can be difficult to empty if the cat is too large to put enough pressure on them while grooming. I’d noticed she was starting to have trouble reaching her back end. So, I followed this guide, skipping straight to step 6:

    https://www.wikihow.com/Express-a-Cat%27s-Anal-Glands

I expressed her glands and the symptom disappeared. She wasn't in any discomfort anymore. She’s lost some weight since then and it hasn’t happened again.

So, if your cat is active and eating but has this symptom on its own, give this guide a go—and don't forget to keep up with their worming if they’re due for a dose (following the recommended schedule strictly, of course).

"Hi, did your cat get better?! Mine has exactly the same thing yours had…. (Slimy fluid, off their food, sleeping all the time, won't move) I don't know what to do! The vet has never seen anything like it." "Hi, could we have an update on your cat please? Mine has the same symptoms." Hiya, is your little one doing okay?

The best thing to do is see the vet. There’s an outbreak in certain parts of the country at the moment, but it could be something else—only a vet will be able to tell you for sure after a proper check-up.

Hi, did your cat ever recover?! Mine has exactly the same thing yours had…. (Slimy discharge, not eating, sleeping all the time, not moving) I don't know what to do! The vet has never seen anything like it before. Hi, could we have an update on your cat please? Mine is showing the same symptoms.

Hi there, mine had the same thing. It’s feline parvovirus (panleukopenia), which is a very serious and highly contagious disease.

Evening everyone, I’ve just seen your posts and my cat has been going through the exact same thing since this morning; this liquid just won't stop leaking out. The vet gave her an antibiotic, some anti-diarrhoea medicine, and a syrup for the vomiting. The thing is, she’s stopped eating and drinking now, and I feel like the medicine is actually making her worse. I’m really worried 😔 Please, if your cats are doing better, give me some advice for mine.
