Hi everyone, I’m posting this because my cat, Rajah, has just passed away following surgery (anaesthesia and neutering). His head was all swollen right after the op, so I called the vet straight away. He told me that my cat had been rubbing his head against the carrier all afternoon and that’s how he explained it (I should mention his carrier is a soft fabric one). He told me to call back on Monday if needed. So, I felt reassured. Rajah slept well that evening, then the next day he seemed a bit tired (I just put it down to the surgery). On Sunday morning, we found Rajah lifeless under the stairs. Rajah was a five-and-a-half-month-old cat, very fit, funny, cheeky, playful, and so kind. A total sweetheart! I’m absolutely heartbroken by his death because we were a real team (I work from home so we were together 24/7; he used to sleep on my desk in the afternoons while I worked). I hope sharing this story prevents other people and cats from going through the same thing! Does anyone know if what happened to Rajah was anaphylactic shock (angioedema) or something else? Thanks in advance. Either way, if this ever happens to you, please insist that the vet sees them immediately!
Cause of death following surgery (neutering a male cat) – angioedema?

Hello Chapata.
What an awful story!! I'm so sorry for what happened.
Anaphylactic shock happens immediately after the product in question is administered. It’s fatal very quickly after that if treatment isn't given (and sometimes even that isn't enough). So I don't think that was the cause for your poor little one.
The vet is at fault; given the symptoms, they should have seen your cat IMMEDIATELY!!
You’re right, definitely find a different one next time.
Thinking of you, it wasn't your fault at all, please don't blame yourself....
Thanks for your comments.
The vet told me that, in his opinion, if it had been anaphylactic shock, it should have happened much sooner than that (he died a day and a half after his operation) and he doesn't know why it ended this way. I've decided not to ask for a post-mortem because I don't want to reopen the wound and I want to let him rest in peace.
