Hi everyone,

I'm posting because I'm getting increasingly worried about my cat, Leo! You see, he's always been in tip-top shape, but he's starting to get on a bit now (he's 14) and his health is declining slightly.

I noticed this evening that he has a bald patch on his right leg.

Cat losing fur on its leg – smooth, oval-shaped bald patch

It seems pretty clear that I need to get him to the vet quite quickly; this spot doesn't look right at all. I've done some digging and I've got a feeling it looks like ringworm, even though that's apparently quite rare on the leg.

I just wanted to get your opinion and some more general advice for my cat. Should I stop letting him out every day at his age? Is there anything I can do to help him before I can get him to the vet?

Thanks in advance

PS: if anyone could recommend any good vets in the Brussels area, it would be a massive help! I've had some rather bad experiences recently!

Hi, could you let us know what was wrong with your cat, please? Mine is showing the same symptoms. I’ve booked an appointment with the vet for Monday. Thanks.

Here is an article worth a look. The skin may look healthy, but we can't give a diagnosis ourselves; the best thing to do is see the vet to rule anything out. Best of luck.

Hi, In my opinion, the skin looks healthy, even though it is definitely unusual to find a bald patch. Only a vet will be able to tell you if it’s a skin condition (which is likely) or something else, but I don't think it’s an absolute emergency unless the cat seems to be in pain with that leg. Skin conditions are usually easy to treat, but they won't just clear up on their own. A 14-year-old cat who is used to coming and going as he pleases will be miserable if you suddenly stop him from going out. I think it’s better to let him do his own thing rather than being overprotective. Sorry, I’m based in France, so I don’t know any vets in Brussels (it's a lovely city, by the way...).
