Hello,

I was at the vet yesterday and they prescribed some parasite tablets to be taken once a month. Are these tablets actually effective?

I also wanted to ask, they gave me another tablet (a wormer)—is that something they only take once in their lifetime?

Thanks

Hi everyone, Since the start of the year, I’ve been using flea tablets for MORFALE (a feral rescue who is now about three and a half years old). They’re working really well. I give her one as soon as I notice her scratching (though I haven't actually seen any fleas with the naked eye), making sure to space them at least a month apart, obviously. I also give her a worming tablet every three months because she spends a lot of time outdoors and she’s quite a hunter – she brings back mice and eats them every now and then.

    Hi there,

Flea and tick tablets are indeed very effective and highly recommended. They should be given once a month, especially if your pet goes outside. The way they work depends on the specific brand, but generally, the ones you get from the vet kill any fleas currently on the pet and provide a sort of barrier for a month. They don't actually repel fleas, but as soon as one lands on your pet, it's killed instantly by the medication circulating in the bloodstream. These tablets also protect against ticks, which can carry serious diseases.

Worming isn't just a one-off thing; it needs to be done every three months. This tablet kills and prevents internal parasites like worms. If your cat goes outdoors and hunts, it’s even more important to keep this up, as they can catch worms from the prey they catch.

Make sure to leave a 48-hour gap between the two tablets so you don't overwhelm their system. Start with the flea treatment, as fleas can actually give your pet worms, so it's best to get rid of them before treating the worms themselves.

    Best wishes,

    Doriane
