Small black lumps / crusts around my cat's bottom

Hi everyone, for a while now my cat has had these tiny black lumps, almost like bits of dried poo, around her bottom:

Small black lumps / crusts around my cat's bottom

It doesn't seem to bother her too much, but I'm not sure if it's painful when I touch them or if she just hates me trying to wipe her (I only used a gentle oil, but I've stopped doing that now because these scabs/lumps fall off on their own, but they always come back looking slightly different every day).

She's got a vet appointment coming up soon, but I wanted to see if this has happened to anyone else's cat. Hopefully, someone can shed some light on it as I can't find anything similar online.

Thanks in advance 😌

Hi, one of my cats has the same thing, but it's not bits of poo. They're anal secretions (nothing to do with an infection), but my vet couldn't explain the cause. It started after an operation about eight years ago and my cat still has this little issue, which is harmless by the way... I can't tell you much more than that, but I'm certain it's definitely not leftover poo!

    Hi Wakamiz,

No, it's nothing at all, it's actually just some tiny bits of leftover poo!

The real challenge is diplomatically persuading your cat to let you clean their "bum" as Blue Cat calls it ;-) ... because all cats hate it!!!

Instead of wipes (which are bad for the environment, expensive, and the "specially for cats" label is just a marketing gimmick), I use organic baby wipes, or simply a cotton pad soaked in organic sweet almond oil... and above all, a firm touch used with a reassuring tone and plenty of praise, without being put off by the feline’s protests during the cleaning operation!

Thanks so much! It's true that my cat has a bit of a difficult past, so that definitely plays a massive part! I didn't even know cat wipes were a thing, so I’ve made a note of that and will definitely give them a go as well!

Hi, Some cats that are in a bit of a rush don’t always finish their business properly, which can leave a few 'leftovers' behind... Plus, some cats just groom themselves much less than others, which seems to be the case here. If a kitten is taken from its mother too early, it might not clean its bum as well, as it’s the mother who teaches them 'intimate' grooming by licking them thoroughly after they've been to the loo. They then learn by copying her. You can get special cat wipes for their bums (Glandex, for example). You don’t need to worry about any irritation. No cat likes having their backside touched—any more than they like their mouth being messed with. It doesn’t mean it’s painful, though. Lastly—and I’m stumped after this—it could be a haemorrhoid issue. The vet will be able to tell straight away.
