Litter tray liners: for or against?

Hi everyone,

I’d like to know if you use liners for your litter tray or not.

I used to use them to protect the tray, but they always ended up full of holes, which made cleaning a real hassle. I stopped using them because of that, but now the tray is getting damaged from the constant contact with urine.

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts, thanks.

    A massive thanks, Neya!

I’ve just cleaned the litter tray with white vinegar and there’s not a mark left; it looks brand new!

So, there's no need to buy a replacement or bother with tray liners anymore.

It’s a brilliant tip that really takes the hassle out of the litter tray chore.

    👍

Oh yes, @Aurore Boréale :) Try leaving it for at least 30 minutes. I leave mine for a long time because my litter tray is 7 years old, and with two little ones, there are bound to be more stains. But anyway, it works—I’ve given one of the trays a new lease of life like that. The main thing is to do it regularly.

Lucretia, I’m not familiar with those brands, but to be honest I think they’re all pretty much the same.

Neya, I hadn’t thought of cleaning the litter tray with white vinegar, I’ll give it a go. But half a day will be far too long for my girl; she always seems to need to go right when I’m cleaning it, wouldn’t you know it!

Hi there. I’ve tried using liners but I wasn't really convinced. In the end, I just leave the tray as it is. I also get stains on the tray—it’s just limescale. I let the tray soak for a good half-day in water and white vinegar, then give it a scrub with a sponge. Everything comes off easily. If you do it every month, you don't need to use too much elbow grease :). It's cheaper than buying liners and it cleans and disinfects it perfectly.

I didn't use to use them, but I've been using them for a few months now. I've got litter trays where you can hook the liners on. It's true that the bags often end up with holes in them, but despite that, it's still much easier to change the litter than it is without them.

As for brands, I buy mine from pet superstores (like Pets at Home). I'm not sure if you have those same shops where you are.

Ciflette, you shouldn't feel ashamed of buying budget bags if they do the job!

I've got a Tesco near me, so I'll go and have a look, thanks.

I get the bags from the supermarket (the store's own brand, shame on me). But I’ve got a cat who isn’t a big fan of sharpening his claws on plastic.

    Thanks for your replies.

Actually, the tray isn't just stained; the urine is eating into the plastic. I don't really want to have to replace the whole hooded litter box every three months because of it, and I'm not sure if I can find a replacement tray on its own that would fit.

@Ciflette, what brand of liners do you use? They might be a bit sturdier.

Personally, I don't really have any major issues with litter tray liners, other than the odd hole on the sides.

I happened to find a litter tray at the supermarket that lets you "clip" the liners in place.

By changing the litter twice a week and using plenty of it, I don't have any trouble with the liners getting torn.

I’ve tried it as well and had the same issue with holes in the bottom of the bags. I didn't notice any stains though, as my litter tray is a very dark blue.
