Couple's unexpected encounter on a walk changes three lives forever

By Ludivine Mazzotti•

One day in October 2025 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Kayla and Brendan Dunn were out walking their dog, Cora.

The couple and their dog had only just left their house when a tiny cat ran right up to them.

The poor thing was extremely thin – she was practically skin and bones.

A ravenous appetite

The couple were deeply moved by the encounter. Brendan rushed straight to the supermarket to buy some cat food, while Kayla stayed behind with Cora to keep the little cat company.

When Brendan returned with two tins of food, the starving cat devoured them eagerly. Afterwards, the couple settled her in their garage for the night before planning a trip to the vet's the next day.

Two months of TLC

The next morning, the vet examined the cat, whom the couple named Callie. She wasn't microchipped, but she did have fleas and ringworm. The poor thing was dangerously underweight, weighing just under 4 lbs (1.8 kg)!

Kayla and Brendan decided to adopt her. To protect their dog, Cora, they kept Callie quarantined in the garage and followed a strict treatment plan: daily cleaning of her living space, baths, and of course, medication. After two months of dedicated care, Callie was finally fully recovered and was able to be spayed.

Nearly a year after their first meeting, Callie looks nothing like the starving kitten they found on the street. She is now at a healthy weight, happy, affectionate, and always ready for a cuddle!
