Cat missing after car crash reunited with owner on her 60th birthday

By Elise Petter•

Six years after a devastating car crash, Mary Bowie received a phone call during her birthday walk. On the other end of the line was the news she had long given up hope of ever hearing.

In 2020, Mary Bowie and her family were moving from Colchester to Scotland with their black British Shorthair cat, Pandora. During the journey, their vehicle overturned, as reported by the Daily Mail. Under the impact of the crash, Pandora’s carrier was thrown from the car and burst open, allowing the frightened cat to escape.

Despite repeated searches and appeals for information, Pandora was nowhere to be found. As the years rolled by, Mary, who is now 60, began to fear she would never see her beloved pet again.

An unexpected birthday call

Six years later, a resident in Perth noticed a stray cat trying to get into her house. She contacted the charity Cats Protection, and volunteer Fiona Morrison came out to scan the feline. The microchip scanner gave its verdict: the cat’s chip was still working perfectly, and the Bowie family’s current address was registered to it.

Tears of joy and a perfect reunion

Mary was out walking with her family to celebrate her 60th birthday when her phone rang. When she heard the words "Cats Protection Perth", she could hardly believe her ears. The city is only about 10 miles from Errol, where Pandora had originally gone missing. "There were a lot of happy tears that afternoon," she told the Daily Mail. On Facebook, she described it as "the best surprise ever", adding that Pandora recognised them straight away and is settling back in wonderfully.

For Fiona Morrison, who has been volunteering for 26 years, this reunion is one of the most heartwarming moments of her time with the charity. Cats Protection has used this wonderful story to remind pet owners of the vital importance of microchipping their pets and keeping their contact details up to date.
