Hikers rescue a helpless kitten only to discover one of France's rarest felines

By Elise Petter•

A group of walkers made an extraordinary discovery in the Pyrenees after rescuing what they thought was a lost, tabby kitten.

During a peaceful walk on Mount Baïgura, in the heart of the French Basque Country, some hikers came across a defenceless little creature. The animal was frightened and clearly all alone, with a lovely tabby coat and sweet blue eyes. Convinced it was a young domestic kitten lost by its mother, these animal lovers decided to step in immediately to keep it safe.

Reluctant to leave the kitten to fend for itself against the dangers of the mountain, they scooped it up gently. They then took it to a specialist rescue centre, believing they were simply doing a good deed.

An incredible surprise for the rescuers

It was only when they handed their little charge over to the Hegalaldia association in Ustaritz that the walkers learned the true identity of the animal they had saved. As reported by the local newspaper La République des Pyrénées, this was absolutely not a house cat. It was actually a European wildcat. At barely a month old, this feline belongs to an extremely rare wild species that has been under strict protection in France since 1976.

This discreet predator, one of the last of its wild lineage in the Pyrenees, requires very special care. The rescue team has to be highly creative every day to ensure the kitten does not get used to humans and keeps its natural wild instincts.

A tailored routine before returning to the wild

To preserve the young feline's essential wild nature, the carers wear camouflage gear, masks, and gloves whenever they feed him. The kitten is currently living in a 215-square-foot leafy enclosure. It is filled with brambles, tall grass, and branches, perfectly mimicking his natural habitat to help him through the weaning process.

Monitored constantly by discreet cameras, this young adventurer will be released back into the wild as soon as he is independent enough. This heartwarming story also serves as a valuable reminder. If you ever find a wild animal that seems abandoned, it is always best to take a photo and contact a specialist rescue centre before trying to move it.
