But as she got closer, she spotted a cardboard box with a note and a bottle of water taped to the top. Looking inside, the rescuer was shocked to find several terrified kittens, huddled close together and panting in the heat.
The note simply explained that they had been found in the new home of the person who left them there.
Sadly, the rescuer couldn't take the kittens in herself, as she was already caring for several animals. So, she contacted her colleague and shelter manager from RescueConnect. Together, they loaded the box into the car and headed towards their new foster home.
An unexpected escape
But halfway there, the mother cat managed to escape through a hole in the top of the box. Looking in her rear-view mirror, the driver spotted two kittens who had also managed to squeeze out to follow their mother... When they arrived, the rescuers gently caught the mother cat and searched for her babies. Fortunately, the whole family was recovered safe and sound.
The mother cat was named Maxie. Now that she has finished nursing her kittens, she is being cared for at a cat café in Alexandria, Virginia. She is due to be spayed soon before she can head off to her forever home.
