Dog follows owner's ambulance for 12 miles, only to be abandoned by new family

By Elise Petter

After running for miles behind his owner's ambulance, loyal Diego was hoping for a fresh start. But his story has taken an unexpected turn.

Diego, a lovely seven-year-old dog, has melted the hearts of thousands with his exemplary loyalty. When his owner was rushed to hospital, the brave dog didn't hesitate for a second. He ran for nearly 12 miles, refusing to lose sight of the vehicle taking his companion away. Once he reached the hospital, he waited patiently outside, guided by his unconditional love.

He was taken in by a local rescue centre where he was given all the care and affection he deserved. It wasn't long before the brave pup caught the eye of a couple living in Rome. Deeply moved by his extraordinary story, his new owners seemed ready to give Diego the warm, loving home he so desperately needed.

A heartbreaking discovery

Sadly, this beautiful new chapter was cut short. As reported by the French newspaper Nice-Matin, just a week after moving into his new home, Diego was spotted wandering alone near a train station, without even a collar. The rescue team spent seven anxious days worrying about him after his adoptive family suddenly went silent and apparently moved away, before finally learning he was safe.

A search for a forever home

Now back in the care of the devoted volunteers, Diego is waiting patiently for his next chance. Despite this sad setback, the team remain fully determined to find him a loving forever home—one that can offer this big-hearted protector the stability and affection he truly deserves.
