Dog heartbroken after losing puppies, but five encounters change her life forever

By Ludivine Mazzotti

For several months, Maddie Trelinski and volunteers from the Labor of Love Transport Rescue charity, based in Greenville, South Carolina, in the USA, tried to rescue a stray dog.

Rescuers regularly saw the dog wandering alone near busy roads. They decided to name her Annie.

Sadly, the poor dog wouldn't let anyone get near her.

A mother in desperate need

However, the situation was urgent: Annie was heavily pregnant and looked ready to give birth at any moment. Eventually, rescuers managed to bring her to safety outside a restaurant where she was scavenging for food.

Sadly, her puppies were nowhere to be found. Rescuers searched the entire area, but to no avail. Annie was no longer producing milk, so the team assumed her little ones were old enough to have moved on by themselves.

Becoming a wonderful surrogate mum

Maddie, who was fostering the dog, eventually decided to adopt Annie for good. Years have passed since then, and Annie now regularly welcomes foster puppies into her home. She has transformed into a truly protective big sister.

Recently, Annie proved once again how vital her role as a protective sister is. Five young puppies arrived at the foster home after their mother was tragically hit and killed by a car. When they first arrived, the little ones cried constantly, feeling disorientated and frightened.

Annie immediately sprang into action, watching over them and doing everything she can to soothe them. The gentle dog lets them climb all over her to sleep and showers them with cuddles – just like little puppy Bernard, who you can see in the photo below. Well done, Annie, for being such an inspiration!
