Woman who wanted a dog left speechless, after pet becomes Olympic champion

By Ludivine Mazzotti

Carolina Diz had always dreamed of adopting a dog.

Sadly, her daily routine and living arrangements made it impossible to welcome a pup.

Instead, she decided to adopt April, her very first Siamese fighting fish. These beautiful little freshwater fish are famous for their vibrant colours and long, flowing fins.

An unexpected bond

At first, Carolina thought she had chosen a relatively low-maintenance pet. However, she soon realised she had a lot to learn about fish! She discovered that Siamese fighting fish are actually highly trainable.

She started by training April to follow her finger. Gradually, she encouraged him to swim through an underwater hoop. With plenty of patience and a daily treat, the little fish got the hang of it and eventually managed to jump right through the hoop!

A true athlete

During the Covid-19 pandemic, Carolina adopted Katara. This little female fish turned out to be exceptionally talented. Carolina taught her to swim through hoops, weave between posts, and even nudge a tiny ball decorated like a football.

Then, in 2020, Katara actually won the Betta Olympics, an online competition showcasing the talents of pet fish!

Carolina and Katara share a truly touching bond. The clever little fish even seems to recognise her owner's face and hands. We are absolutely fascinated by this wonderful relationship – a huge well done to Katara on her Olympic title!
