A few signatures, some final advice whispered quietly, and the big moment finally arrives. Aïda, a young Beagle, looks at her new humans, Joséphine and Arnaud, with a mix of curiosity and shyness. For her, this is the first day of the rest of her life, far away from the walls of a laboratory. Just like her, more than 600 Beagles have already been given this incredible second chance, thanks to the charity Beagles of Burgundy, based in Vézelay, France.

Dogs learning how to live
"They discover absolutely everything when they arrive," explains Bertrand Villegas, the charity's vice-president. It is a phrase that sums up both the huge challenge and the sheer beauty of these adoptions. These dogs have never felt grass beneath their paws, never received a loving stroke just because, and never played with a ball. Rebuilding their lives requires patience and gentleness, and the charity offers unwavering support to the adoptive families.
Since it was set up six years ago, the charity has seen its rescue rate speed up, going from just a few dogs a year to nearly a hundred. This success is built on a strong, discreet relationship of trust established with research laboratories.
A mission built on trust
The secret to how Beagles of Burgundy operates is simple: confidentiality. "We promise never to reveal where the dogs come from," says Bertrand Villegas. This fundamental rule allows laboratories to hand over their animals at the end of their trials with complete peace of mind, knowing they will go to loving, well-prepared homes.
The charity funds the transport itself, sometimes from other European countries, to offer this second chance. Every adoption is wonderful proof that even after a difficult start in life, happiness is always possible for our four-legged friends.
