Miracle puppy pulled from rubble 5 days after Venezuela quake

By Elodie Carpentier

In Venezuela, rescue teams are working tirelessly to find survivors. Five days after a devastating double earthquake struck the country, a glimmer of hope has emerged from the ruins. A little dog has been rescued alive after spending nearly 120 hours trapped beneath the rubble of a building.

A miraculous discovery

A young dog named Giselle was located by an elite rescue team from El Salvador, working in the coastal city of Caraballeda in the hard-hit state of La Guaira.

As reported by the New York Post, the rescuers were alerted by faint barks and whimpers coming from a dark gap amidst the reinforced concrete.

A glimmer of hope amid tragedy

Far from being paralysed by fear, Giselle immediately started wagging her tail and covered the face of the rescuer who had just freed her with "kisses" and licks. She was then taken into care to be given food and hydrated with a syringe.

This miraculous rescue comes as the human toll continues to rise. The two successive earthquakes, with magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5, struck the north of the country just 39 seconds apart, leaving at least 1,943 people dead, over 10,500 injured, and at least 15,000 displaced.
