This cat works twice a month: his role is vital to save senior dogs (video)

On 18 June, rescuers at the Muttville Senior Dog Rescue (MSDR) shelter in the US paid a touching tribute to Mustache the cat.

The shelter specialises in rescuing senior dogs.

Every rescuer is deeply committed to the lives and care of the shelter's dogs.

A very calm cat

Among the team members was Mustache the cat, who played an extraordinary role. Twice a month, the clever kitty had an essential mission. He was in charge of testing how well the shelter's dogs got along with felines. This was a vital task, as many potential adopters already have a cat at home and want to know if their new companion will live peacefully with them...

At the shelter, Mustache, a ginger cat, was chosen for this specific job because of his exceptionally calm nature. He was used to living around dogs and was always relaxed when meeting the shelter's residents. Most of the dogs watched him curiously or ignored him completely, which is a great sign of compatibility!

A new recruit takes over

But life wasn't always easy for Mustache. The ginger cat was bravely fighting advanced kidney disease. Sadly, after a long battle, he passed away, leaving a huge void behind...

However, his mission at the shelter didn't end there. Another cat, named Little Dude, has taken over. This lovely kitty has stepped right into his predecessor's pawprints.

Thanks to his hard work, and Mustache's before him, many of the shelter's dogs are now known to be cat-friendly. This greatly increases their chances of finding a loving forever home. What a wonderful mission!
