Carley Mae has always been fascinated by her bouncy little neighbours. "She's very gentle," Michelle Owens told The Dodo. "She watches them from the window and sometimes likes to chase them if she gets the chance." However, the dog had never managed to get close to them.
A few days ago, while Michelle was out of town, a friend went to her house to look after the place and let the dog out. As she opened the garden door, the friend immediately noticed that Carley Mae was irresistibly drawn to something unusual by the pool. As she got closer, she was horrified to discover that a tiny baby rabbit had fallen into the water and was struggling to stay afloat.
An incredibly gentle rescue
While the family friend panicked and ran to get the pool skimmer, Carley Mae decided not to waste a second. Showing remarkable calm and instinct, the dog walked along the edge of the pool, following the little creature's movements.
As soon as the baby rabbit was within reach, Carley Mae leaned over the water. With immense gentleness, she carefully gripped it between her teeth and lifted it to safety on the poolside, without leaving a single scratch. The moment it was back on dry land, the little survivor, none the worse for its ordeal, scampered across the garden to take cover in the bushes.
Treated like a true hero
When she returned from her trip, Michelle Owens rushed to check the footage from her security camera to see what had happened. Watching the footage of the impromptu rescue, the owner was left speechless by her dog's courage.
The baby rabbit has since been spotted in the garden, safe and sound, and back to its usual morning routine. As for Carley Mae, she immediately received the honours befitting her new hero status. "She got an extra treat, tons of praise, and a good belly rub," Michelle said happily.
