It's the kind of holiday souvenir you never forget. A couple from Berlin were enjoying a holiday in the heart of the Tzoumerka region in Greece.
During their trek, the couple came face to face with a puppy. “A slightly scruffy little thing came up from behind and touched my leg. From that moment on, she never left my side,” the hiker recounted in a video posted on Instagram and shared by The Dodo.
White with brown patches and ears, the young dog, who was then five months old, became their impromptu mountain guide. She followed in the holidaymakers' footsteps, trotting happily alongside them for miles until the trails ended.
A fateful encounter
The couple quickly realised how special and affectionate the animal was. However, it was an incident on the trails that sealed their shared destiny.
“One day, as we were coming down the mountain in the rain, I slipped and nearly fell,” the hiker recalled. “She ran straight to me, whining and jumping all over the place, trying to help. That's when I realised: she's my dog. And I can't leave her here.”
From Tzoumerka to Berlin
As their trip was coming to an end, the couple began the necessary steps to bring her back to Germany.
After a visit to the vet to ensure she was in good health and to finalise the international travel documents, Milou headed to Athens for a few weeks of mandatory quarantine.
After a month apart, Milou was reunited with her new family in Germany. In a short time, the dog was transformed. She has since become “the queen of Berlin”.
