Shar-Pei refuses to go near men: volunteer's gesture to win her trust goes viral

By Elise Petter

A rescue animal's past is often filled with invisible trauma. For Winnie, an adorable Shar-Pei, life on the streets left her with a deep distrust of men.

After being found as a stray by the Needles shelter, Winnie was transferred to the Best Friends Pet Adoption Center in West Los Angeles, USA. She quickly won over the hearts of the team. "Winnie is a classic Shar-Pei: loyal, funny, and incredibly devoted. Once she bonds with you, she's a companion for life," explains a representative from the organisation.

However, the carers soon noticed a problem. Winnie was comfortable with women but was particularly hesitant, even avoidant, with male staff and volunteers. It took her much longer to place her trust in men.

The wig strategy

Determined to help the dog progress at her own pace, the team focused on positive interactions. That's when one of the male carers had an unusual idea: he decided to put on a long-haired wig to change Winnie's perception of him.

It's hard to say if the dog was completely fooled by the trick, but the confusion had an immediate effect. Intrigued by this strange figure, Winnie calmed down, watching the carer closely to try and understand the situation. This moment of lowered guard allowed for a gentle approach. The rescue centre took the opportunity to film the scene, a fun way to show the dog's need for patience and adaptability.

Looking for a patient family

Today, Winnie is still learning to trust, one step at a time. She is now officially up for adoption and is looking for a quiet home without young children or other dogs, where her boundaries will be respected.
