On 20th April, Hans was walking his dog Benny along the Charles River in Boston, USA.

While the pair were enjoying a quiet walk, Benny suddenly spotted two swans in the river.

His instincts took over: he leapt into the cold water and started swimming in pursuit of them.

He wouldn't listen

Hans repeatedly shouted for Benny to come back, but the dog didn't once turn around... He completely ignored him! Hans was terrified, unable to shake the image of his dog drowning.

So, without a second thought, he jumped into the water to save his dog. However, as Hans got closer, he started to lose feeling in his limbs. The water was freezing cold and had left him numb... He wondered if he would even be able to make it back to the bank.

A narrow escape

Hans mustered his last bit of strength and managed to push his dog towards the bank. Once they were both safely on dry land, onlookers who had witnessed the whole thing offered Benny a blanket.

While Hans is relieved that they are both safe and sound, he admitted he really thought they were going to drown. He said he wished there had been a lifebuoy to grab onto, or that the onlookers had called the emergency services. But thankfully, no real harm was done, and it's safe to say Benny won't be going for a swim in that river again any time soon!
