The story of Peep, an 11-year-old Chihuahua, has gone viral on TikTok for all the wrong reasons. His former owners asked for him to be euthanised, not to end his suffering, but for their own convenience.

The story began in early April, when a family showed up at a shelter in Indiana, USA, with Peep. Despite his advanced age, the little dog was in good health. Yet, his owners' request was chilling: they wanted him to be put down. The reason? Apparently, Peep wasn't getting along with the family's new dog.

The shelter refused to euthanise a healthy animal and immediately contacted rescue organisations. Chihuahua Rescue Indiana answered the call, saving Peep from a tragic and unjust end.

The toll of a heartbreaking betrayal

Brandie Schroeder, an experienced foster carer, took Peep in on 7th April. But the shock of being abandoned was so severe that the little dog simply 'shut down'. He was lethargic, trembled uncontrollably, and suffered from severe diarrhoea. He also refused to eat or drink.

Worried about a possible intestinal blockage, Brandie rushed Peep to an emergency vet. After a battery of tests and a night on an IV drip, the diagnosis came back: Peep wasn't suffering from any physical illness, but from extreme stress. His heart was broken by the betrayal of those he had trusted for over a decade.

A new beginning, taco-style

Thanks to his foster family's patience, Peep began to turn a corner. The little senior started enjoying walks on the grass again and received much-needed dental care. He now has a cute little quirk: his tongue often hangs out of the side of his mouth, which only adds to his charm.

”He loves to wander around the house and burrow into his bed like a taco,” says Brandie. Despite his failing eyesight and hearing, Peep is finally enjoying the security of a loving home. His story has sparked immense anger on TikTok. ”I’m too angry to write what I really think,” one user commented, while another lamented human selfishness.

Fortunately, Peep has already received several adoption offers.
